There is a knocking noise coming from the engine

If the oil filter came off then the engine will have lost oil pressure. Since you now have a knocking noise that indicates that the bearings for the connecting rods lost oil and they are damaged. When the bearings become damaged it causes a knocking sound because of the rotation of the crankshaft. To verify this you will have to remove the oil pan and check the connecting rod bearings. If you find that the bearings are bad you will have to rebuild the engine to get all of the metal particles out of the inside of the engine and all of the oil journals.
