I have a 2011 Jeep Patriot that is over revving to 4000rpm. I know this 4000 rpm is a safety feature to protect the engine. What can cause the over revving. Mechanic's Assistant: Okay, I'll connect you to the Mechanic to discuss this further with you. Before I do, is there anything else you want him to know? That's all

extremely high idle like this is usually either the throttle body itself or a major vacuum leak. 1. scan your vehicle for any diagnostic trouble codes with these code(s) you can see the area or the component of the failure. if you see a throttle body code then pull the air snorkel off and see if the throttle plate is stuck open or if its closed. i will also look at the throttle position and throttle pedal position to see if its being commanded that far on a live data screen. checking the throttle plate would def be a first look 2 vacuum leak inspect for any vacuum line off or hoses off. follow all hoses and line from the intake manifold and see if any are split or popped off. you can also start the vehicle and listen for a vacuum leak . It can be heard over the engine revving like a large loud hissing or sucking noise i would start with these areas first let me know how you make out and if i can assist you further i would be happy to help! cam

That sounds good. One thing though. It is not showing the dummy light and throwing out codes. Interesting.

there could be a pending code that is just on the borderline of setting. you would see this on pending codes or live data of pedal position and throttle plate position. i also wanted to mention one more thing... please double check your floor mats that they are not holding the gas pedal down i honestly get this about twice a year from thick mats being pushed up gradually and eventually holding the gas pedal down causing a high rev cam

Thank you that is a good thought. I gave you a high 5!

thank you! good luck with your repair :) cam

You hit the nail on the head. My wife just came from the car wash and self serve vacuum. I have Weather Tech floor mats and she had never taken them out and cleaned them before. I set the mat correctly and started the Jeep and the idle is normal for being in park. I appreciate you immensely! In all businesses experience truly rules. Wish I could give you another rating.
