2004 Jeep Cherokee with 177,000 miles. Recently IAC idle motor replaced and right before that ECM replaced/reprogrammed. Now have a new problem: all digital displays go off and come back on randomly (odometer, clock, EVIC display for temp, [compass](/topics-compass/), etc); the radio and CD player work fine but no display. Sometimes displays come on when cranking, then a short distance, they go off; sometimes this happens (on/off randomly) while driving. On a recent drive, displays went off when I turned on windshield wipers; I thought "Ah, Ha ~ I found problem!" This happened several times; now turning wipers on doesn't trigger anything. Help!

Not sure if you can see my questions about 2004 Jeep Cherokee.

Than you June. Have you checked for codes in the computer? What size engine do you have?

Have discussed issue with Mechanic/shop owner but haven't taken it in yet to see if there's a code. I'm driver with basic knowledge; don't know engine size. I've had so many issues with auto this year as noted in question. It was in shop for 2 1/2-3 mo. waiting for part during pandemic lock down; fortunately, we have a 2nd car but I hate driving it. ..

Thank you. Please allow up to 15 minutes while I type your answer. Ok this issue is caused by a bus communication issue provided the powers and grounds are good going into the digital display. You or a technician would need to get in there using a compatible scan tool and check for communication with all modules on board the vehicle including the digital display. I would recommend to have this done when the problem occurs so you get an accurate reading and know for sure if the computer system is communicating when this issue occurs.

The problem is intermittent so would be difficult to make to occur. In the past, I've just left the car and let him drive it around. At least this will give a clue. I think it's time to get rid of this vehicle! Thanks.

Car won't start, and rear windshield wipers don't work
Most likely, these are two separate issues. A vehicle that doesn't crank or start indicates a problem in the starting/charging system. Hi - first task is to recheck what codes are still present that represent a "knock sensor failure (https://www.yourmechanic.com/question/knock-sensor-1-by-dylan)". There may be an additional problem that has changed engine timing (worn timing chain for example) that is causing an engine...
