Q: I USED to have a 1982 Ford Escort that would 'hangup' in 2nd. I got a temporary fix by replacing the fluid/filter but it 'relapsed

Back in 1984-1987, I bought a used Hertz rental car from KSCFCU in Titusville, FL while in the USAF and stationed at Columbus, AFB, MS. It had a history of shifting problems according to the repair history provided with it. It used to 'hang-up' in 2nd gear and could be 'encouraged' into 3rd by either letting go of the throttle pedal and then stomping on it or let it stay in 2nd until it finally went into 3rd. I 'cured' it (temporarily) by replacing the transaxle fluid and filter (i was a crew chief on A-10's and T-38's. Any ideas what it could have really been?
