The car stalls won't drive Mechanic's Assistant: Is the check engine light on? Does the car stall at idle or when driving? Yes and when driving Mechanic's Assistant: What is the make/model/year of your car? 1997 Honda accord Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Accord yourself? What have you tried so far? Putting [transmission](/topics-transmission-honda/) oil in that's it Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? The rpm moves but it doesn't go any faster

Hello this is Zach and I will assist you today. You may receive an automated message for a phone call, it is an optional service. Have you scanned your accord for codes? And you mentioned you added transmission fluid. Is there a leak?

I've scanned for codes but because the car is old it wouldn't bring it upno there is no leak
Automotive Expert
You may have to try a different scanner. Your 97 accord is obd2 and should be able to be scanned for codes. Can you give me a little more information about the rpms going up but not moving? Do you have any acceleration, or just very slow?

It goes up when I press on the gas peddle but I don't go any fasterAt first I was moving slow now it's not moving at all
Automotive Expert
Ok thank you for the information. How much transmission fluid did you have to add.

Only added one because it looked like it was still full
Automotive Expert
Ok I understand. And just double checking, your check engine light is on?
Automotive Expert
Ok. You definitely need to scan it to move further with the check engine light diagnosis. When you out of park into reverse or drive. Doss the indicator change in the gauge cluster?

At first it did in reverse and drive but after we added the fluid the only thing that changes is the rpm
Automotive Expert
Ok. For the trans issue. You will need to check if the transmission pump is operating. The pump builds up pressure inside the trans so it can engage the gears and shift. The easiest way to check is to remove one of the transmission cooler lines. With a drain pan under the car where the lines are, disconnect one. And have someone start the car while you watch the hose. Aim it into the pan. If it shoots fluid out, that means the pump is operating. If not, it means the transmission pump has gone bad.
Automotive Expert
Here is what the transmission cooler hoses look like. Beware, if the pump does operate it can make a mess. But it is a needed step to determine what could be wrong.

Where is it located
Automotive Expert
The red arrow in the picture is pointing to the cooler hoses, there are 2. They are on top of the trans, towards the [radiator](/topics-radiator-honda/).

Ok
Automotive Expert
Keep me updated on what you find. I will be here to help you through the whole process. I also do not know your experience with automotive repair, is this something you will be able to do?

It just came out of one of the hoses checking the other hose now
Automotive Expert
Ok you only have to check 1

Ok well fluid shot out
Automotive Expert
Ok good. That means the transmission pump is operating. What did the scanner show when you tried to scan the car?

We did the scan at autozone and it showed on the scanner that it was one code but it wasn't trying to pull on the computer what the code wasWe looked on YouTube on another way to do it with a paper clip then the engine light blinked 7 times
Automotive Expert
At auto zone, did it show a code number? The paperclip trick is good for cars 1995 and older. Cars that are 1996 and newer are obd2. They need to be scanned unfortunately. The 7 flashes could be indicating the car is in a limp home condition due to the check engine light being on. But its not actually giving you the proper diagnostic code.

No code number didn't show anythingWe have tried twice and they couldn't bring up a code
Automotive Expert
It could have a code stored in the transmission contol module. Might be the reason auto zone couldn't read it. Usually their scanners are only able to read the engine codes. The transmission contol module is able to set dtcs just like the engine module. And the TCM will illuminate the cel.

Ok so how do we check that and I Just turned the car on after having it turned off for awhile it doesn't go forward but it drives in reverse
Automotive Expert
for the cel. You'll have to have it scanned at a shop that has a scanner that can communicate with the TCM. When you drive it in reverse. Does it rev up alot before it moves, or does it seem normal?

Rev up a lot before it moves
Automotive Expert
Ok. It has a transmission issue. It needs to be scanned. It could have a faulty shift solenoid, speed sensor, or a worn out component inside the transmission. Is there a local transmission shop in your area that you trust?

but their closed till Monday
Automotive Expert
Ok. At this point you can't do much more untill the tcm is scanned. I will keep this open, so you can get back to me.

Ok thank you
Automotive Expert
Your welcome, have a good weekend!
