Q: Car overheating, heater/AC won't work there is smoke coming somewhere from the engine when it overheats & exhaust is leaking.

asked by on December 29, 2017

At first, my car's temperature gauge said that it was overheating when it really wasn't. Shortly after, my A/C and heater stopped working. Now my car is actually overheating, and smoke comes up from somewhere in the engine when that happens. It's been burning through all the coolant and oil. There's also a leak coming from the exhaust. After I turn my car off there's like a bubbling sound coming from the engine. When I go to give it gas it also misfires sometimes. I took it to a mechanic and they told me that my car needed a full tune-up, and it also had carbon built up in the engine. I'm looking for more opinions to get my car fixed. Please and thankyou

My car is making a noise from around the alternator area, but when the serpentine belt is taking off the sound stops. 2003 Ford Mustang
Hi there - good plan for diagnosis, isolate the motion that is causing the symptom! The noise could be an alternator bearing, or the serpentine belt idler or tensioner pulley bearing (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-idler-pulley). These make noise that is proportional with engine...
