Q: Q: Battery not charging

asked by on

My battery is not charging, and I think it is totally dead.

Hello. Several things can be causing this. Have your battery load tested. Most battery sellers do the load test for free. If it is good, then check the alternator output with a meter on the battery terminals. The meter should read 13-14 volts at idle. If it is reading less than 12, it is not working properly; you will need to have a qualified technician test your battery, and determine if it is bad for certain. Other possible problems could stem from corrosion on the battery terminals and cables; this is usually a white color.
