Q: Air con

asked by on

I had my air con recharged last year abd have ben putting it on every coupke of weeks for half an hour. Just lately all it seems to do is blow warm once again. I thought it would last longer than 10months? Does this mean it needs a recharge already?

My car has 76000 miles.
My car has a manual transmission.

Hi there:

Most of the time, air conditioning recharging will last anywhere from one to three years. It really depends on how often it’s used, where you live and the condition of the overall AC system. One problem that often gets overlooked in AC maintenance is the air conditioning high pressure hose. This device is used to supply extra pressure to the AC system during idle to ensure cool air continues to flow when the air conditioning unit runs slower. When the car is accelerating the high pressure hose is not very active.

If your car is blowing warm air while it idles, but blows cool air when driving the problem may be with the hose. I think your best bet it to have your AC system inspected by a local ASE certified mechanic to check for leaks; especially if you plan on keeping your car for an extended period of time.

If the A/C system was working properly (producing cold output) and then just "suddenly" stopped, broadly there are two possibilities: 1) you got a large sudden leak and consequently all the refrigerant disappeared at once; or 2) the refrigerant charge...

Q: Should I have to force the thermostat spring all the way down to get it to lock into the housing on a 2010 equinox

This is normal when installing an aftermarket thermostat into the factory housing. The factory one comes with a new housing since the lock tabs will break as the housing ages. If you got it locked in place and it works...

Q: I am broke down on the road because when I try to drive my steering jerks and so does my wheel

What you are describing sounds like a problem with the rack and pinion gears. The rack and pinion gear set does two things: It converts the rotational motion of the steering wheel into the linear motion needed to turn the...
