  • P2445 OBD-II Trouble Code: Secondary Air Injection System Pump Stuck Off Bank 1
  • P2446 OBD-II Trouble Code: Secondary Air Injection System Pump Stuck On Bank 2
  • P2447 OBD-II Trouble Code: Secondary Air Injection System Pump Stuck Off Bank 2

What the P2444 code means

The purpose of the secondary air injection system pump is to reduce the amount of harmful pollutants that are emitted into the atmosphere by the exhaust. To do so, the secondary air injection system pump is to pull fresh air into the exhaust system.

The secondary air injection system sends a voltage signal to the powertrain control module (PCM). This voltage signal carries information regarding pressure and flow that is expected to remain within predetermined specification that has been set by the manufacturer.

If this voltage signal does not remain within the manufacturer’s predetermined specifications, the PCM will set the P2444 diagnostic trouble code and the Check Engine Light will come on.

What causes the P2444 code?

  • Faulty air injection valve
  • Faulty one-way check valve
  • Faulty air injection pump
  • Faulty pressure sensor
  • Pressure sensor wiring that is frayed, broken, or shorted
  • Pressure sensor connector that is damaged or corroded
  • Pressure sensor connector that has bent pins
  • Faulty vacuum switching valve
  • Vacuum switching valve wiring that is frayed, broken, or shorted
  • Vacuum switching connector that is broken, melted, corroded
  • Vacuum switching connector that has bent pins

What are the symptoms of the P2444 code?

  • Check Engine Light is on
  • Secondary air injection system may be noisey
  • Engine may stall when idling
  • Engine may stall when starting the vehicle
  • Engine may hesitate when accelerating
  • P2444 diagnostic trouble code stored in the PCM

How does a mechanic diagnose the P2444 code?

  • Diagnostic trouble codes should be diagnosed in the order that they appear in the PCM.

  • Use an OBD-II scanner to collect all trouble codes that have been stored by the PCM as well as freeze frame data.

  • Inspect vacuum switching valve wiring for frays, breaks, and shorts.

  • If any vacuum switching valve wiring has frays, breaks, and shorts, repair and replace as required.

  • Inspect the vacuum switching valve connector for damage, corrosion, or bent pins.

  • If the vacuum switching valve connector is damaged, corroded, or has bent pin, repair and replace as required.

  • Clear all diagnostic trouble codes from the PCM and operate the vehicle or complete a test drive to see if the P2444 diagnostic trouble code comes back.

  • If the P2444 diagnostic trouble code comes back, inspect pressure sensor wiring for frays, breaks, and shorts.

  • If any pressure sensor wiring has frays, breaks, and shorts, repair and replace as required.

  • Inspect pressure sensor connector for damage, bent pins, and corrosion.

  • If the pressure sensor connector is damaged, corroded, or has bent pin, repair and replace as required.

  • Clear all diagnostic trouble codes from the PCM and operate the vehicle or complete a test drive to see if the P2444 diagnostic trouble code comes back.

  • If the P2444 diagnostic trouble code comes back, inspect the one-way check valve to ensure it is working properly.

  • If one-way check valves are faulty, repair and replace as required.

  • Clear all diagnostic trouble codes from the PCM and operate the vehicle or complete a test drive to see if the P2444 trouble code comes back.

  • If the P2444 diagnostic trouble code comes back, inspect the air injection pump to ensure it is working properly.

  • Inspect the air injection pump hoses for breaks and loose connections.

  • If there are breaks and/or loose connection in the air injection pump hoses, repair or replace as required.

  • Clear all diagnostic trouble codes from the PCM and operate the vehicle or complete a test drive to see if the P2444 trouble code comes back.

  • If the P2444 diagnostic trouble code comes back, inspect the air injection system fuses.

  • If there is damaged wiring or pumps that are causing a blown fuse, repair or replace as required.

  • Clear all diagnostic trouble codes from the PCM and operate the vehicle or complete a test drive to see if the P2444 trouble code comes back.

  • If the P2444 diagnostic trouble code comes back, there may be an issue with the PCM. If the PCM is faulty it will need to be replaced and reprogrammed.

Common mistakes when diagnosing the P2444 code

It is common for misdiagnosis of the P2444 diagnostic trouble code to result from failure to check for faulty one-way check valves. Testing one-way check valves is important to give a proper diagnosis. In addition, it is important to add a drain tube onto the pump housing during replacement of the secondary air injection pump, as failure to do so may lead to multiple secondary air injection system pump failures.

How serious is the P2444 code?

A diagnostic trouble code is normally considered serious when it causes driveability issues or a change in performance. For the P2444 diagnostic trouble code, the engine may stall, or hesitate during operation of the vehicle. Driving while these symptoms are present can be dangerous. As a result, the P2444 diagnostic trouble code is considered serious and should be diagnosed and repaired as soon as possible.

What repairs can fix the P2444 code?

  • Replace faulty air injection valve
  • Replace faulty one-way check valve
  • Replace faulty air injection pump
  • Replace faulty pressure sensor
  • Repair or replace frayed, broken, or shorted pressure sensor wiring
  • Repair or replace damaged or corroded pressure sensor connector
  • Replace faulty switching valve
  • Repair or replace frayed, broken, or shorted vacuum switching valve wiring
  • Repair or replace melted, corroded vacuum switching connector
  • Repair or replace bent pins in the vacuum switching connector

Additional comments for consideration regarding the P2444 code

It is common for one-way check valves to be overlooked during diagnosis of the P2444 trouble code. To prevent misdiagnosis, it is important to check one-way check valves because these valves are a common cause of this code. If faulty one-way check valves are not replaced in addition to the faulty secondary air injection system pump, damage may be caused to other secondary air injection system components.
