2010 Subaru Forester oil light came on simultaneouslh with loud knock. I stopped and added 1 qtvoil (all I had). It didnt measure on the dipstick, but turned on engine and knocking stopped, and oil light went off. Drove 1/4 mile to safe turnoff and noise started to return, but never lost power. Mechanic tells me engine is shot Mechanic's Assistant: Is the power loss consistent, or does it fluctuate? I did not observe any loss of power - jyst return of noise Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Forester yourself? What have you tried so far? It is at the mechanic. They as far as i know did not add oil Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? The mechanic said something about the timing chain damaged by lack of oil.

Good Morning , A knocking noise is always a bad sign for an engine. I am not sure exactly what is wrong it , but lack of oil and knocking usually means it will need to be replaced. At this point a used engine is probably your most affordable option

Just one thing bothers me - the knocking stopped temporarily when I added that one qt...

Its hard to say why it stopped unless i know exactly what is knocking.

Ok

Usually knocking is a rod bearing , its possible it got a little quieter with oil but if it is knocking there is already too much wear between the parts and it will only get worse faster I would look on car-part.com for a used engine to at least get an idea of what they are selling for in your area

Shake and vibrating when i brake.
This is a common concern and can be tied to one or more of a few problems. If you feel the vibration most while braking, the rotors (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/brake-rotor-disc-replacement) may be warped. If the vibration is more consistent with high speeds...
the timing chain is making noise at startup what needs to be replaced to fix the problem?
There are many reports about this issue with your truck. I have access to IATN (International Automotive Technicians Network) and the consensus is everything on the front of the motor needs to be replaced. Which is a very, very large...
Check engine light on and got the codes P0700 and P0731
Diagnostic trouble code P0700 (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/p0700-obd-ii-trouble-code-transmission-control-system-malfunction-by-spencer-clayton) and code P0731 indicates that there is a fault in your car's "automatic transmission control system". Although there could be a faulty "part," (such as a shift solenoid (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/downshift-solenoid-replacement) or speed sensor (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/transmission-speed-sensor-replacement)), there are...
Windshield wipers working intermittently, & sometimes won't shutoff
If there is a switch malfunction, it's possible that such could explain both faults. If the problem is not in the switch, then there could be a bad relay in the circuit (if so equipped), loose fuse, bad ground, and/or...
grinding noise when driving and turning steering wheel
Hi there. What you are describing is commonly associated with damaged or faulty wheel bearings (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-bad-or-failing-wheel-bearings). One warning sign of a wearing out wheel bearing is a loud grinding or roaring sound that comes from the tire area of your...
Is shaking above 45 MPH signs of failing torque converter?
A shake at higher speeds can be caused by numerous different things. This could be caused by your engine running badly, out of balance wheel, or even loose suspension components. My best recommendation would be to have your entire vehicle...
