Q: Put key in ignition. Lights and everything come on for a second, then went off as I turned the key. Now no power, key stuck

asked by on September 22, 2016

I put the key in the ignition and started to turn the car on. First click of the key and the lights and everything looks good. As I turned it further to the start position, all lights go off, no power in car whatsoever, and the key won't turn back to release, so key is stuck in ignition. Bad ignition switch?

My car has 174000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Hi, thanks for writing in. This sounds like your battery cable connections are corroded or loose at the battery. Try to see if the battery connections are loose by wiggling them and see if power returns. If power returns, then have the cables removed, cleaned, and reconnected to test the battery. Hope this helps and best of luck!

Pull the fuse for the ABS system (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/abs-light-is-on-inspection) to disable it and then test drive the car (don't forget to re-install the fuse later). If the pulsating/grinding noise remains that means the ABS system has nothing to do with your...

Hi there, congratulation on your high-miler! The first task is to review the problem codes stored in the on-board diagnostics. Despite the replacement of all facets of the cooling system, in stop and go traffic, my temperature gauge spikes.
Hi There, What you are describing sounds like a fan clutch (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/fan-clutch-replacement) that may be wearing out. A mechanical fan clutch works by helping to control the radiator cooling fan speeds as the engine heats up and cools down. As...
