Hi my Pontiac torrent was making a knocking/ticking type of noise when I started it up. I’m trying to figure out why Mechanic's Assistant: Where exactly do you think the noise is coming from? And how long has this been going on? The engine I parked my car Friday after wrk went back to start it that night (all I did was moved my car frm one parking spot to the next) went to reverse in my spot and that’s when it started Mechanic's Assistant: What year is your Torrent? 2007 Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Torrent yourself? What have you tried so far? I’ve tried putting a quart of oil so far

Hello, my name is James. Can you tell me how low the oil level was before you put the quart in?

Im unsure if u can receive pictures but this is before I added oil
Automotive Expert
That's pretty low. When was the last time you had an oil change?

I'm due at 127,368 mile I'm abt 7-800 miles frm that nowMy last change was in JulyI haven’t had a tune up yet. Last time I checked which was back in April the mechanic told me I didn’t need one

Tune ups are not something that is really done any longer. Spark plugs only get changed whenever you have a drivability issue or an emissions issue that causes the check engine light to come on. There are no distributors any longer, nor any plug wires. If the coils fail, it triggers a check engine light. You can't really clean the fuel injectors, only replace them. And again, if they fail it triggers a check engine light. About the only thing you can do is change out the air filter every 10,000 miles or so. Even the fuel filter, in most cases, is actually part of the fuel pump assembly and is in the gas tank. Engine noises usually indicate a major failure inside the engine, or one that is about to be major. There's really not a lot you can do about the noise, except prepare for either an engine overhaul or replacement. It is possible the noise you are hearing is coming from one of the accessories (alternator, A/C clutch or compressor, [water pump](/topics-water-pump-pontiac/), P/S pump, or harmonic balancer). To make sure that is not the case, remove the serpentine belt and start the engine. If the noise is still there, you have an internal engine problem (big expense). If the noise is gone, then one of the accessories I listed is causing the noise (not so big expense).

Ok I’ll go with that. Thankyou

Brakes hard to press
It sounds like your brake booster is worn out. There is a diaphragm inside the booster that wears out and will not allow the booster to get enough vacuum to work properly. I would have a technician from YourMechanic come...
the car will rotate but it won't crank and when it does rotate it sounds faster than it needs to be
This sounds like potentially a timing belt that has jumped. If this is the case this can cause major damage to the cylinder heads. This model is known to have this problem and it is somewhat common. I would suggest...
Cylinder 1 misfire. Leads plugs and coils all changed. Is it the ECU or are there other possibilities?
Hello, thanks for writing in. If you have a misfire (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/how-can-problems-with-the-ignition-system-cause-misfiring_2) on that cylinder with a new plug and coil then you either have an injector issue or an internal engine problem. Most of the time the problem is internal...
Heater and coolant not working
Engine coolant is not only responsible for cooling the engine, it provides heat for the interior as well. Coolant flows from the engine into the heater core, which is located inside the car behind the dash. If coolant is not...
Flooded engine 1998 Chevrolet K1500
Hi - ouch, these problems make you crazy! Great effort on resolving the "sugar in the tank" recovery. I believe the fuel injectors (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/how-long-does-a-fuel-injector-last) in the throttle body have either failed (stuck open or leaking) due to residual sludge in...
Traction Control System
Hello, It sounds like you may have a problem with your [traction control]( module or potentially a faulty wheel speed sensor. The traction control system monitors the steering and stability of the vehicle and engages when loss of traction has...
Replaced starter and replaced fuel pump, and battery...car still wont turn over.
Hi Candice. Thanks for contacting us today. If you turn the key and the starter will engage, but the car will not start, then it's likely that either an ignition timing component or a fuel system part is the source....
While driving the oil light comes and then the engine light and the car stops...I turn the car off and on and it resumes to work
The oil pressure light will usually come on when a few things could be happening. Either the motor is in fact low on oil, the oil pump could be failing or not pumping oil sufficiently or the oil pressure sending...
I need the front timing cover gasket replaced on my 2012 GMC Acadia to stop an oil leak. How much for the parts and labor?
