Q: Our Honda Civic Ex starts and drives but loses the ability to accelerate which causes us to stop cut the car off then on,drive

asked by on March 18, 2018

Car starts and drives for about a min then start to lose the ability to accelerate. We have to turn the car off for a minute then turn it back on for it to drive again and it repeats. There is a light burn smell and makes a loud sound when trying to accelerate.

My car has 220000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

This can be caused by a few different problems. First have computer tested for stored codes to see if it points you to the problem like a clogged fuel filter or a bad catalyst in the exhaust. If this has been done then have fuel pressure tested and if you need further diagnosis then have a mechanic like one from YourMechanic come and test the problems for you.

It sounds like it could possibly be a motor mount or transmission mount causing the problem. If you see a lot of movement in the engine when you have it in gear you probably have a cracked or broken motor...

Brakes don't work very well when it's cold
You have two different issues here. The slow crank may be that the battery is getting weak. It may need to be replaced (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/battery-replacement) or the terminals cleaned (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-battery-terminal-ends). The other issue of the high idle and braking issue is...

It sounds like you have activated the anti-theft system, and after several attempts to try and start it, it disables the starter also. You should have the system tested to see if the key is bad, or if your key...
No fuel pressure in my line. Car won't start. When it did star, it died and now won't start at all.
As you know, this may be a result of a faulty fuel pump (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/fuel-pump-replacement). This may also be a result of a failing fuel pressure regulator (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/fuel-pressure-regulator-replacement) as well. This is what monitors the fuel pressure in the system and...

Diagnostic Trouble Code P0456 (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/p0456-obd-ii-trouble-code-evaporative-emissions-system-small-leak-detected-by-jay-safford) indicates a small leak in the EVAP system and such will not account for the rough idle. Check your gas cap as a faulty cap will frequently cause that code to set. If you replace...

Hello! I was running low on coolant so I added water until I could buy some.
This time of year you need not worry about running for a few weeks until you can get the coolant changed. Keep in mind that you might have a leak that needs attention and don't let it get low until...
