Q: My car hesitates sometimes when I accelerate and wants to stall

asked by on November 02, 2016

Hesitates and tries to stall. Not all the time but at least twice a day. Will start idling rough and I have to put it in neutral and put the pedal to the floor. There maybe some backfire when it's sputtering. I have heart failure and have a disabled grandson who lives with me and I care for. We live off of $700 a month and can not replace it or afford a mechanic. It is our only transportation and there is no public transportation in our area. I have to drive it daily but each day I feel is it's last and I won't be able to get these kids to school and appointments nor will I be able to get it out of tow if it's towed away. I can't afford Alot of maybe or change all the sensors.

My car has 220000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

How do you check the manual transmission fluid?
Your car’s manual transmission needs fluid just like an automatic transmission does. It’s necessary for lubrication, for preventing friction and for maintaining pressure inside the transmission itself. If the fluid gets low, you may experience problems with shifting and driving....

My car shows P0172 but the car is running fine
Hi there. As you already know, replacing components without diagnoses, can be expensive and time consuming without resolution. The P0172 code (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/p0172-obd-ii-trouble-code-system-too-rich-bank-1-by-blake-griffin) is an indication of too much fuel or not enough air is being delivered to the engine. The...
The steering wheel is stuck in the locked position.
Hi there. Try turning the steering wheel left and right and turning the ignition key to the 'ON' position. With a good tug, the ignition should turn and the steering wheel will free up. If the steering wheel does not...
Where is the button for the vdc located? 2006 Infiniti G35
Hi there - the VDC switch (labeled "VDC ON (https://www.yourmechanic.com/question/what-does-the-vehicle-dynamic-control-off-indicator-light-mean-on-the-dash-by-una-s_29187)") should be just above the slot for the key fob on your vehicle. THe VDC light being on means this system - Vehicle Stability Control - is "on" and functioning...
My Infiniti ex35 shuts off while driving. Said to be a sensor but not sure which one.
A sensor can certainly be the cause of a stalling issue. However, the only way to determine which sensor, if it is in fact due to a sensor at all, is to properly diagnose the stalling issue (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/car-is-stalling-inspection). Your vehicle...
2006 Pontiac Grand Prix GT reduced engine power.
Hey there. The reduced power light typically indicates a fairly serious problem with the throttle system. When this light illuminates the vehicle will often go into a “safe mode”, which will severely limit the speed of the car and in...
