Q: My 2002 Volkswagon Passat keeps leaking coolant from the plastic reservoir.

asked by on April 10, 2017

My 2002 Volkswagon Passat has been leaking coolant from the plastic resevoir for about 6 mo. Now. I just fill it up once a week and have not had issues. Last night , however driving on the highway the car completely overheated.....smoke everywhere and temp. Gage on high. I had ignored the coolant light for a few days. Got off highway and went to Autozone. Tank was completely empty. Guy filled it and said the bottom if tank seemed to be detached from a valve?? It still ran hot on the way home but no smoke.....only seemed to get overheated at red lights. Help......what to do?? Is this going to be a costly repair or can I fix this myself??

My car has 180000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Heater only works on high
It sounds like you may have a faulty blower motor potentially drawing too much power from the resistor causing it to burn itself up.
