I have a 1995 GMC Sonoma. I am attempting to replace the back-up bulbs, and for some reason, the bulb socket doesn’t match the bulbs that fit my truck.

This is the socket

the bulbs
Automotive Expert
Hello, I'm Tyson with just answer, I’m sorry you’re having trouble. I can assist you today. Automotive Expert
You definitely have the bulb that truck calls for but that socket looks like it's for a 3157 bulb.

That’s where my confusion is as well. I have found that this truck is a frankenstein, being a 94.5/95 model, but this I did not expect
Automotive Expert
I love GM I have a silverado myself but i hate they half year stuff they've done for years.

Does the 94 call for a 3157?
Automotive Expert
It does not, how long have you owned it?

4 years. All of the bulbs were factory, which is amazing, so I am just now getting to these lights to change outEverything up to this point in lights has been exact fit on what it calls for
Automotive Expert
I'm thinking for some reason someone changed out the harness early on in it's life. It does look factory though. Maybe a monday factory job..

I’m thinking this whole truck was a Friday factory job. AKA ready to go home and drink a cold one.
Automotive Expert
I think i've figured it out. back up bulb, does reverse light match that bulb?

Yessir it does. Plugged my LED backup bulb in, but didn’t get power, which I didn’t expect to
Automotive Expert
Because the [brake](/topics-brake-gmc/) light bulb it calls for the 3057

Correct. I changed those Friday
Automotive Expert
And your reverse slot is a 3057 as well the one pictured?

That’s what it seems like
Automotive Expert
I'd take the old one with you to match it up but i'd say quality control missed that.. is it that way on both sides?

It is
Automotive Expert
I got a good one for you. I was fleet manager at a shop, the guys where doing oil changes, it was a new corolla, tech came and got me said i've been doing maybe 20 of these this week they all have canister oil filters, i went out there this one was spin on... Back and forth with toyota finally there corporate came back and said the November batch that year had spin on.... Made no sense. May be a case like that. No one new anything we had to cross reference the filter.

Probably so! Could also be previous owner decided for some odd reason to change the bulb socket
Automotive Expert
That's what i'm really thinking it looks OEM so at least if they did it appears they did it well.

Will a 3057 even function as a reverse light?
Automotive Expert
Yea, i'm not sure if my silverado is a 3057 or 3157 i can't remember but they do the job.

Awesome. If I were to get LED’s, will I need a resistor?Lightbulbs.com is claiming that those factory bulbs for that year were split between 1156 and 3156. This could be our problem
Automotive Expert
It could be I honestly wouldn't have even paid attention i'd pull one out of inventory and put the same one back in but that sounds like something they'd do.

Like you previously stated, I love General Motors, will never own another vehicle (especially not Ford), but they do some of the most outrageous stuff when it comes to parts
Automotive Expert
Same here lol. Had i seen it enough i'd have caught on maybe.. i'm same on fords. i walk enough when I want to lol.

Gotta hand it to Ford though, their parts actually fit what they say they fit. That’s probably because they have to get changed out so frequently though
Automotive Expert
Yea they got the part swap down pat, if they'd just LS swap and call it a day.

Any ideas on the resistor for the LED’s?
Automotive Expert
For signal or reverse lights?

Reverse. I plan on putting regular signal in
Automotive Expert
I put LED in my reverse on my silverado no resistor, you should be ok. If it was signal it would give you the fast signal light out warning.

Awesome. I’ll let you know how it goes tomorrow! Hopefully I get the correct bulb this time. Thanks for your help, and nice talking to you
Automotive Expert
Sounds good, you as well.

3156 was correct. I went with LEDs, and it turns out my rear turn signals are also my brake lights. Thanks for the help again.
Automotive Expert
Awesome! You're welcome, you may check amazon for interior leds really brightens up the interior as well.

I switched my interior with a 211-2 a couple of weeks ago. Makes a world of difference. Any more ideas for livening up the truck on the exterior? I already have 3 sizes too big tires, 2” spacers, LED low beam lights, line-x bumper and grill, and adding a 2” suspension lift soon. Aka trying to make a 2wd a 4wd
Automotive Expert
Sounds like you've got it covered I have seen some pretty cool halo [headlights](/topics-headlight-gmc/) for those.

I’ve considered replacing headlight and taillight assemblies with custom mades, but for some reason I like the classic style. Do you know where I can find the front lettering for the grille for less than $150?
Automotive Expert
174626159219 This ebay set looks good item number above.e

Know where I could find the missing nut?
Automotive Expert
That would be harder but a hardware store could match the threads.

Gotcha. I’ll let you know how they turn out!
Automotive Expert
Sounds good. Actually if you type '1995 gmc sonoma emblem nut' in ebay a bunch of options come up, you'd just have to mesure the stud.
Automotive Expert
https://youtu.be/czpsFCQCpaY You could also throw a borla or flowmaster muffeler on it.

I would love to, but I don’t want that “V8 wannabe sound”. If I could find something that sounded fantastic on the 4.3, I’d be all over it. I’m actually removing the cat this weekend. Honeycombs are ruined inside
Automotive Expert
https://youtu.be/EDjNI25WHoQ The flowmaster super 10 actually sounds pretty awesome, you'd want some sort of cold air intake on it though.

I hear the fuel injected already has a semi-cold air intake? Is this true?
Automotive Expert
Not really only ones i've ever seen have semi cold air is the 5.7 vortec with the 'tube' filter. Those you take the lid off the filter box very big difference.

I’ll definitely look into it. Heard you can gain a whole 5-10 horsepower
Automotive Expert
https://www.knfilters.com/57-3009-performance-air-intake-system I have one on my silverado and my wife's suv. There's a a difference, more so in the suv with the 6.2 they really had airflow restricted on it. It really depends how bad the original airflow was.

Airflow is terrible as the air filter box no longer bolts onto the frame beside the radiator.
Automotive Expert
Is your 4.3 the Vortec?

sir
Automotive Expert
370461739028 ebay item number I'd try this cold air over the K&N I watch this below video on K&N pretty sure it was installed wrong to rub but it did lead me to that much cheaper option. Either way price wise much better for same result. https://youtu.be/qJT1Q05F8Rs

Do you think it would have much effect?
Automotive Expert
Definitely need an [exhaust](/topics-exhaust-gmc/) I finally found a video on a true dual exhaust 2 mufflers, https://youtu.be/Ij9Qq0bo-64 I think so if your not getting proper airflow it will help. i've only not been able to tell a difference on my vette it's out of control anyway lol. But everything else i can tell. When i tow my trailer it made a major temp difference, hills on hot days i'd get close to 240 even with K&N filter in box i took box out It stayed much cooler.

At this moment, I’ve got a single outlet “rumble” muffler on there. So changing that $20 part out would not be a problem. I’m very handy with a welder, so I could for sure turn it to dual exhaust. Dual exhaust + CAI = good performance?
Automotive Expert
https://youtu.be/Ij9Qq0bo-64 I'd be shocked if you cold air and true duel and didn't see a noticeable gain.

Awesome. I’ll see what I can come up with this weekend!
Automotive Expert
https://youtu.be/NMR-o8souOo This one shows a good underside of the true duel, not a fan of the thrush mufflers though, 40 series flowmaster sounds good though.

2.5” piping?
Automotive Expert
I believe so on most true duels, you may have to do a set up like this if you run true duel space wise. https://youtu.be/rTUxOIMfekc now that jones flow pack in that video is 3" so it all depends on the parts.

Would it be more beneficial to get a muffler that has two outlets, or make the dual after the muffler?
Automotive Expert
If you're going with on muffler definitely 2 outlet.

That’s what I was figuring. I’ll look into the 40 series some more, and see what I can do
Automotive Expert
Yea single in duel out muffler is way to go.

deleting the cat will make it louder and deeper toned, correct?
Automotive Expert
It'll definitely make it louder. i'd look into high flow cats, no cats you could run into a CEL staying on.

sir. Thankfully, we don’t have emissions in my county, as I would have probably failed years ago. I’m just trying to maximize fuel economy to the best of my ability. I don’t have a gauge on it, but I’m assuming it’s around 12 MPG now (Tires aren’t helping)
Automotive Expert
any better airflow will help fuel economy some. I always run at least 40psi in my truck tire 50+ if i'm towing as well. As far as ride check rockauto.com they have great prices on shocks and struts, windshield wipers also, actully just orders wipers for my wife's suv bosch that parts stores sell $35, each, $5 each with shipping $19 crazy cheap.

https://www.roughcountry.com/gm-suspension-lift-kit-225n2.html?find=1995-gmc-sonoma-2wd-735784This is the lift I was more than likely going to purchase. The shocks are what sold me, but I’m unsure if there will be a difference after adding a leaf. (I don’t tow/haul). I will need struts soon, and my mom runs the local Autozone (store manager) so parts aren’t terribly expensive anymore thankfully
Automotive Expert
The leaf will keep it level keep rear from dipping down on you.

I hear that it creates a rougher driving experience though. Just don’t want the new shocks and leaf to counteract each other.
Automotive Expert
It shouldn't much, a little bit though to me is worth it to not have the rear down look. i'm checking but i don't think your truck has struts i believe the shock just sets inside the spring.

That would be awesome and save a lot of money. I didn’t even think to check on that. Just figured it had them
Automotive Expert
https://youtu.be/s2zDwikIIy0 I was correct. They will have to come out to replace springs but yea that kit does your shocks and springs.

Awesome. Also probably going to switch from drums to disc in the rear. There are tons of little things like that I want to do to this truck to make it safer/look better overall. It’s a hard life trying to make an old farm truck into a showroom truck
Automotive Expert
I hear that been looking at a disc conversion for my silverado, down the road i'm doing MSD coils and wires when it warms up.

I actually just replaced my plugs last week. Went with ac Delco platinums. I also bought wires, cap and rotor, and ignition coil. Found out the hard way that everything but the plugs didn’t fit
Automotive Expert
yea you never know sometimes.

It was all a part of the 94.5 debacle we started with.
Automotive Expert
The ole half year, it wasn't until about 99-2000 parts really started recognizing the half year.

Have I already told you about the OBD2 sensor? Or do you know about that with the 95-95 models?
Automotive Expert
wasn't 95 still obd1?

The system, yes. The sensor, no

For example
Automotive Expert
oh yea the port I don't know why they do that stuff lol. i just checked my 95 fleetwood my grandmother just gave me it's clearly obd1 first time i even looked at it been changing front suspension parts on it.

It’s ridiculous how they just threw parts on this thing. Guess that’s what kept people going in to dealerships to get serviced though.
Automotive Expert
Yet at the same time they get theme at the dealer and sometimes they are just as clueless lol

Oh I know. You’re better off with trial and error and fixing it yourself. You’ll still end up saving a couple hundred dollars
Automotive Expert
Yea, dealerships lost there way about 25 years ago, it's all profit now.

I went to get grille retaining clips for this truck at the dealership, luckily they only costed me $1 a piece. Emblems were $100 per letter. I want to know the profit margin on their parts
Automotive Expert
about 95% easily.

Well look man, I don’t want to take up any more of your time. Is it okay if I keep this thread open so I can contact you this weekend on advice with cat, muffler, and other projects?
Automotive Expert
yea no problem sounds good.

Thanks again!
Automotive Expert
You're welcome.

Just noticed my AC and Heat will not blow out of front dash vents. No matter where I tell them to blow from, they only come from windshield, bottom of the dash, or both. Any ideas?
Automotive Expert
Sounds like the blend door actuator

That’s what I figured as well. Might as well do blower motor while I’m in there too
Automotive Expert
Yea I if it’s original I would those brushes do wear in those motors

When the front vents did work, they were VERY weak. While I’ve got you, considering you seem to be the guru of finding good parts for cheap, have you seen a cheap bumper cover for my truck lately?
Automotive Expert
I see some on carparts.com for about $70 https://www.carparts.com/details/GMC/Sonoma/Replacement/1995-1997/6997P.html?TID=gglpla&origin=pla&utm\_source=google&utm\_medium=pla&utm\_campaign=9089238228&gclid=Cj0KCQiAst2BBhDJARIsAGo2ldVYbmgTewOrT2GchqgRdiLnj7nb\_9ucnZ7vaBUg2VV9X43kA-WEtLQaAg9cEALw\_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

For some reason it shows it doesn’t fit my SLE model, but it looks the exact same
Automotive Expert
You may have to call them on it. Or just go all in on the pictured item.

I would absolutely love to. Actually bought the metal for it two weeks ago. I think you’ve convinced me to do it
Automotive Expert
They look good on those

I have to throw a 4x4 sticker on it somewhere!
Automotive Expert
Look up ZR2 off road stickers. Those are sick on those trucks

I do think those would look nice on the upcoming paint job
Automotive Expert
Yea always like those stickers.

Is the silver piece in the middle of the bumper cover an “impact strip”?
Automotive Expert
That sounds right for that.

Is it required?
Automotive Expert
The bumper covers I see cover whole bumper so i'd think no.

Gotcha. Thank you
Automotive Expert
You're welcome.

I was quoted $1,000 to repair some of the body and paint factory color on the truck. Fair price? Company is sprayglo
Automotive Expert
Looking at there site if that is there extreme package seem like it's thorough and complete.

It’s the supreme package. Body work raised it up a good bit
Automotive Expert
That should be good I think the extreme with hand sanding may give better results. Also on your grill you might look at this replacement with billet back insert. https://www.carparts.com/details/GMC/Sonoma/Replacement/Grille\_Assembly/1995/SLS/7053.html?TID=gglpla&origin=&utm\_source=google&utm\_medium=pla&utm\_campaign=11726351894&gclid=CjwKCAiA1eKBBhBZEiwAX3gql2Sv7kbvXrlQLdRyclTpKkuncPdcnmpy1eMZK5lnXwijBHk4H3opdRoCsRQQAvD\_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Looks about like the one I have currently
Automotive Expert
oh yea, shade has it hidden.

No problem! I appreciate the attempt!I’ve also decided to create my own bumper with a bar that goes across the grille for deer protection. This thing is a magnet
Automotive Expert
Yea they like to play in traffic.

I’ve never owned a car that I haven’t hit a deer in. I either have terrible luck, or God is telling me I need better insurance
Automotive Expert
I hear that

Cat has been removed, and halfway done with the bumper. I’ll pick up where I left off tomorrow. It almost sounds like I would imagine a 4.8 with glass packs sounds
Automotive Expert
Nice you'll have you shoot over a pic of that bumper sounds like it'll be nice.

About 3/4 of the way done, but here’s the bumper so far
Automotive Expert
Dang you know what your doing.

Certainly trying! Helps out when you have an extra set of hands as well
Automotive Expert
That's true.

Only problem is that I only extended 2 from the middle of the grille. I haven’t yet found a light at that skinny2 inches^ sorry
Automotive Expert
What type of light?

Light bar. Sorry I feel like I’m still half asleep and can’t type
Automotive Expert
how wide? you trying to put it between bumper and grill?

On the top of the bumper, centered with the grille. That space is 2” wide.
Automotive Expert
how long?

Ideally 25/26”
Automotive Expert
Sylvania - Slim 20 Inch LED Light Bar - Lifetime Limited Warranty - Spot Light 5400 Raw Lumens, Off Road Driving Work Light, Truck, Car, Boat, ATV, UTV, SUV, 4x4 (1 PC) Paste that in amazon probably 20 inch is closest you'll get.

10-4. I’ll look into it
Automotive Expert
sounds good.

In order to “restore” these letters for the grille, would you recommend a light sandpaper followed by polishing?
Automotive Expert
Probably wet sand with 3000 to 5000 grit with headlights you'd start with 600 to 1000 but i don't think on those you want to be that aggressive.

Gotcha. I’ll give it a shot! Polish after correct?
Automotive Expert
yea probably headlight polish as they are plastic should work the same.

10-4. Thanks. I’ll send pictures of before and after
Automotive Expert
awesome, sounds good.

All done with the grille (for now)
Automotive Expert
Looks sharp!

Thanks for the recommendation! Now we finish the bumper and get a lift kit put on!
Automotive Expert
You’re welcome!

Left on the list: Blinkers Light bar
Automotive Expert
That is one sharp bumper, you should sell custom bumpers, you could do those, and diamond plate style front and rear i've seen them with LED reverse light and all. For what they cost you could undercut them an make some money.

Thanks man. I actually wanted to go with diamond plated, but I’m getting it linex’d so I didn’t want to pay for something I wouldn’t even se.r
Automotive Expert
That will look good.

Hopefully so! I wanted to go with leds on the front, but unsure of what I want to do for blinkers to be honest
Automotive Expert
Possibly a classic oval look.

Light bar done
Automotive Expert
Nice it and that bumper make that truck wow

Just ordered 2” suspension lift. Hopefully I’ll have that on this weekend.
