I’m not sure my wife said oil light came on and then it said to shut off engine and the oil level is good and it said 49% oil life yet Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Acadia yourself? What have you tried so far? I just bought it 2 days ago and I’m taking it to a gmc dealership Monday I just didn’t know if it was okay to drive until then Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? 152,000 miles

Hi Jeremy. Nice to see you today! I'm sorry to hear you are having this problem. I know this can be frustrating. Jeremy, are there any unusual engine noises like ticking or knocking when the warning is set?

no it's quite
Automotive Expert
ok, Perfect. Thank-you, Jeremy. Please give me one moment to type out some information for you. Sit tight one minute... I'll be right back! Thanks for holding, Jeremy. As long as there are no unusual engine noising, like ticking or knocking, then from what you are describing here, this sounds like this may be the case of a failing Oil Pressure Sensor. These are very common fail items on these vehicles. Over time, the internal workings of the sensor tend to fail, and the sensor has a hard time reading correct pressure. The sensor is located on the front of the engine, between the [alternator](/topics-alternator-gmc/) and the oil filter. There is a metal shield covering it. This will need to be removed to gain access to the sensor. Inspect the electrical connector and wire harness for any loose, broken or damaged wires. If no problems are found, I would recommend the 'actual' oil pressure be tested with the use of a pressure testing tool, just to ensure no internal problems like a failing oil pump. If actual pressure checks good, replacing the sensor should solve the problem.

okay I'm taking to a garage Monday it's under warranty just didn't know if I could drive it till thenthe oil level is good and the oil looks good to
Automotive Expert
Yes. Perfectly safe to drive. The oil pressure sensor is for driver informational purposes only. It does not play a role in engine performance or operation.

could the oil pump be bad
Automotive Expert
It 'could' be... but this usually presents with ticking or knocking. So not very likely. But, as I mentioned above, always a good idea to have the actual oil pressure tested to rule this out.

as long as their is no knocking then it's fine to drive, and I'm taking it Monday
Automotive Expert
That's correct, Jeremy.

okay thank you
Automotive Expert
