When I fill up my '15 Ford Escape turbo my car won't start unless I put my foot on the gas! Then my check [engine](/topics-engine-ford/) light comes on? Mechanic's Assistant: Does the light stay on, or does it blink? It stays on Mechanic's Assistant: What year is your Escape? 2015 Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Escape yourself? What have you tried so far? I changed the air filter. Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? Ford Escape (15) has a problem after I fill up. It won't start so I have to give it the gas cause it sounds like it is going to stall. I changed air filter which could possibly cause problems. But this only happens after filling the tank, tried putting it in slowly but that didn't work, was still hard to start???

The check engine light will come on when the computer sees a problem that affects the performance of the engine or [transmission](/topics-transmission-ford/). There are many problems that can fail that will trigger this. It could be a faulty sensor, wiring issue, module fault, engine malfunction, etc. To see what specifically is causing the light to come on the vehicle will need to be tested with a scan tool that connects to the vehicle. This test will provide a trouble code that describes what specific system is having the problem. If you can have the vehicle scanned and can give me the code, I will be able to tell you specifically what is wrong with it. If you do not have a scan tool then you can bring your vehicle to any auto part store and they will scan it for free and give you the trouble code. I would do this ASAP so that we can determine what the problem is and keep any other problems from happening. My goal is to give you the best service possible and to help you. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to let me know. If I’m not online at the time, I will respond ASAP when I get back.

I have no problems starting the car except after I fill it up

The check engine light will show a trouble code for the problem. It's usually an issue with the EVAP canister vent or purge valve.

Is that an expensive fix? I am on tight budget? Can it be fixed by myself?
Automotive Expert
It's not terribly expensive but you would have to use a scan tool to find the code and then test the part. Typically it would cost around $200 for parts and labor.

Thank you. I have a friend with a coder. I will have the code read and get back to you if that's Ok?
Automotive Expert
You're very welcome. Yes of course. Let me know what the code is.

Thank you.
