I have a 2001 ford ranger xlt, 2x4. Replaced the fuel pump, after checking the fuses and relay. Which are fine. The inertia switch is also, not tripped. But the pump is not getting any power. Mechanic's Assistant: How many miles are on the Ford? Has the Ford been starting normally? It has over 200,000 miles. For the most part, it started normally. But, I did notice that sometimes it would start rough. Then it just quit while I was driving. And wouldn't start anymore. Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Ranger yourself? What have you tried so far? We changed out the fuel pump.

The fuel pump is controlled by the fuel pump relay and the relay needs power to it from the fuse #23 (20 AMP) located in the underhood fuse panel to pin #3 at the relay as well as power from the PCM relay at pin #1. The place to start here is to very the fuse is in fact in place and has power in and out of it and if that checks okay, move to the relay and check for power at the relay on pins #1 and #3. If the relay shows power at both pins then it needs a ground from the PCM (computer) on pin #5 to energize and send power out to the fuel pump from the relay on pin #5. See the circuit wiring diagram for testing reference in the link below. See the fuel pump circuit in this link. Ok. The fuse checks out good. And the relay we didn't check with a volt meter. But, it clicks when the key is turned.
Automotive Expert
Okay if it clicking thane that usually means it intergizing, so move to the inertia switch and check to see if you have battery voltage into the switch on the Dark/green wire and out of the switch to the pump on the pink/black wire while cranking the [engine](/topics-engine-ford/) over. Both wires should read battery voltage while cranking the engine over and of so then you should have battery voltage at the fuel pump connector on the same pink/black wire.

Ok. We're not where the truck is at the moment. But, we will be within an hour. So, I will get back to you, then. Do I have to unmount the inertia switch, to test it?
Automotive Expert
No, you can leave it plugged in and mounted and simply back probe the connector at the switch while cranking the engine over.

Ok. Thank you. I will let you know the results.

Thank you and Merry Christmas as well!

Ron. Get this. My boyfriend gets in the truck and proceeds to check the switch. When he pulled back the carpet covering the bottom of the unit, he noticed the connector was not pushed in all the way. He pushed it in until it clicked. Now the fuel pump kicks on when the key is turned. And, I just started it. YAY!!! Thank you, \*\*\*\*\* \*\*\*\*\* help. I'm so glad I subscribed. Otherwise, my boyfriend wanted to bypass everything and wire the fuel pump, direct. Merry Christmas!!!

Vibration when changing gears.
Vibration between shifts in an automatic or manual are pretty similar and are usually caused by loose motor or transmission mounts, but could be mimicked by suspension components. Have a mechanic from YourMechanic inspect your vehicle (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/car-is-shaking-or-vibrating-inspection) for any looseness...
Transmission overheating
Hi. The transmission temperature message pops up on your control panel when the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected excessive transmission fluid temperature. This is a warning to the driver as extreme temperatures can damage the transmission. Transmission temperatures can...
Clunking noise from rear suspension
It is possible that you could have some play in your rear control arm bushings or rear toe adjustment links. I would recommend having a rear suspension inspection performed by a qualified professional to determine where the noise is coming...
It turns over but won't start. And if it starts, it dies out. When it starts, the pressure gauge goes way above 60
Since you mentioned that the motor will eventually start at times, we can assume that it is getting spark. This means that you may have a fuel delivery issue. This may happen due to lack of fuel pressure, a faulty...
Lost both of my car key fobs, what is the cheapest and fastest way to get new keys and get them programmed? 2015 Chrysler 200
Hello - unfortunately, there is only one solution for this problem. Go to your Chrysler dealer, with proof of ownership, and your VIN (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/what-is-a-vin-where-can-i-find-it) number, and write them a check. The dealer is the only source of electronic keys and...
It's runs really bad upon start up, but if allowed to idle for 30-45 min it will run perfectly.
Hi there. What seems to be happening is your engine is being leaned out when running cold until the engine reaches operating temperature. Check the coolant temperature sensor or the engine temperature sensor. These sensors could have a fault in...
Transmission gets stuck when I shift it out of 1st gear sometimes and it takes a lot of force for me to move the shifter 2013 Dodge Viper
Hi there - your Viper uses the Tremec TR-6060 transmission, which handles the torque from the Vipers engine reliably, but is a bit balky in the shifting department. Using synthetic transmission fluid will help, especially in colder climates, and moving...

Hi there. When it comes to engine oil additives, I ALWAYS follow the recommendations of the manufacturer. In this case, Rislone would be correct. Zinc additives or ZDDP is essentially tiny particles of metal that infuse onto engine parts, specifically...
