Q: F150 5.0, oil pressure warning light will come on and off

asked by on December 26, 2017

It only started about a week ago. I will be driving and it most happens when I'm at a stoplight the oil pressure warning light will come on and the gauge will drop to zero pressure if I release the brake the gauge goes back up to normal and my warning light goes off. A few times it's happened when I'm driving and if I just pump the brake pedal the warning light goes back off and the gauge goes back to normal. My oil filter is tight and I have not burned any oil and no oil has leaked for my last oil change.

My car has 64000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

You should have the instrument cluster checked and scanned for codes and check engine harness on drivers side to see if it is shorting out on back of engine near injectors. If no problems are found with harness or codes in instrument cluster or engine computer, then replace oil pressure sensor and have oil pressure checked with a manual gauge.

How do I adjust the pedals?
Each of your pedals (two if you have an automatic transmission, three if you have a manual) can adjust so that they sit at the ideal level for your feet. Adjusting your pedals requires a few simple steps. Locate the...
Car accelerating on its own
Hi. The first thing I would look towards is a problematic accelerator cable. I would recommend checking the accelerator cable for defects, kinks, and miss adjustments. If that is found to be the problem, have the accelerator cable replaced (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/accelerator-cable-replacement)...
My AC
The evaporator is freezing up due to over-cooling. There is a thermistor on the evaporator (behind the glove box) whose function is to prevent the surface of the evaporator from getting below 32F and icing up. It should be cycling...
Turns over but wont start
A no start diagnostic (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/car-is-not-starting-inspection) would reveal the cause. Try holding the accelerator pedal to the floor and cranking the engine. If the idle air control valve is stuck closed and/or the intake air charge is insufficient, the vehicle should...
There is a part on the throttle body that broke, where and how would I go about finding another?
if you are referring to the plastic case that contains the "throttle position sensor" (TPS), the TPS is readily available in the new aftermarket or even as a new OEM (dealer) part. The throttle body itself, and all associated parts...
I start the truck it runs but has no power when I start to move
This kind of reaction is often a sign of low transmission fluid (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/transmission-fluid-service) or a faulty transmission control solenoid. As you know, automatic transmissions use pressurized hydraulic fluid to change gears. Every time a gear change is required, the car's...
Haven't driven car in 2 years and I need to smog it to validate my registration
Buy a brand new battery that is fully charged prior to installation so that you do not needlessly load the alternator. Change the engine oil and filter. Ideally, you should pressurize the oil system (https://www.summitracing.com/parts/mel-mpl-101?seid=srese1&cm_mmc=pla-google-_-shopping-_-srese1-_-melling&gclid=CMad36nQ_tECFR61wAodtbMCkg) prior to starting, otherwise you...
Started idling rough then stalling at traffic lights after about 20 minutes of driving. Replaced fuel pump, fuel filter, and spark plugs.
Try flushing out the fuel system with a fuel treatment. You may have to remove the supply fuel line and blow out the line with air pressure to clean out what could be blocking the line. Check all of the...
I have broken 3 sepentine belts in the last week, i replaced the tensioner pulley as well. What else could be causing my issue?
The pulley has a ball bearing within. The failure mode, or causes of failure, is limited to three possibilities: 1) defective, or worn out, ball bearings; 2) lubrication failure; 3) overloading. To eliminate possibility Nos. 1 and 2 you could...
