How do i disconnect ignition switch connector 1996 chevy s10

Good day. My name is \*\*\*\*\* \*\*\*\*\* I will be assisting you with your question today. The ignition switch is hardwired from the ignition switch and goes to the connector at the end of the ignition harness. At this connector there is a bolt that runs through the center of the connector. To remove, turn the bolt clockwise to loosen and then remove the connector. The bolt is set in the connector and stays fixed. I have attached a photo of the ignition switch assembly for reference.

Which piece are you referring to? The ignition module?

Yea
Automotive Expert
It Is attached by 2 torx screws. #4 torx I believe. One on the top left under the cylinder and one on the rt side of the module.
Automotive Expert
Should pop right out the module receiver after. There will be a connector attached to the top of the ignition Cylinder that will need to be detached as well.

Do you know exactly what thoae wires were and what would habe made them catch on fire...i guess im gonna have to replace the who ignition switch module.. Will one off of a 1999gmc sonoma fit my truck...

Good day. The 3 wires that come from the module to the ignition cylinder are for the GM VATS Passlock system. Usually failure of these is due to normal wear and tear. Slowly over time the wiring sheath becomes brittle and could cause a short to ground. if I remember correctly, after '97 is when they started to revamp this system and were completely changed over by 99. I will confirm for you the years that would be compatible with your s10 and advise.

Great

Switches from 94-97 will be compatible with your S10. Doorman brand is a good aftermarket option.
