Hey so my 1997 Silverado C1500 v6 4.3L has been making a ticking sound the past week in the [engine](/topics-engine-chevy/). What could that be exactly cause when I accelerate it gets louder and quicker. Mechanic's Assistant: Where exactly do you think the noise is coming from? And how long has this been going on? About a week now. I had low to no oil and that’s when everything beginned. I put oil and all in it but it hasn’t gotten better. Mechanic's Assistant: What is the make/model of your '97 car? C1500 Silverado Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your vehicle yourself? What have you tried so far? Nothing yet Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? I haven’t tried anything

BottomCan be heard from everywhere but when under the truck it's heard mainly there louder

that sounds like bearing damage from being low on oil.

My dad was speaking with me and thinks it could be from a bad valveExactly how is it bearing damageI didn't know a engine had bearings
Automotive Expert
A bad valve would cause it to miss and the noise would be more top side. there are bearings on the crankshaft that can be damaged if oil starved. The only sure way to know is to tear the motor down. I would suggest going by your local garage and let them listen to it. an experienced mechanic has a good idea what it is with the pitch of the sound.

Hey if you're available need to ask a question
Automotive Expert
What do need. I am in Dallas anot home but I will try to answer your question.

Okay so the issue begin when I had low oil right. So I'm wondering if maybe doing a correct oil change will help anything because all I did was add oil on top when I went empty on it. So maybe a new [oil filter](/topics-oil-filter-chevy/) and a fresh drain would possibly help anything? And if maybe when I do it or do it now if adding rislone engine treatment would help
Automotive Expert
You can try but I cannot promise anything. It can not hurt it.

Okay thank you
Automotive Expert
Your welcome good luck.

How do you start the engine?
There’s more to starting your engine than just sliding into the driver seat and turning the key. While it’s not super complicated, there are a few steps that you should know. Here they are: Check that the parking brake is...
Car idles high and then low, and then becomes a 30 second cycle.
Hello. A few things I would check are the throttle body (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-throttle-body), the idle air control valve (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-idle-control-valve), and the vacuum hoses. A dirty throttle body or idle air control valve can cause the idle to fluctuate. I would also...
Belt noises pulley wobbles

Worn idler pulleys (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/idler-pulley-replacement) or accessory components along the belt drive system may make noise as a sign the bearings are failing (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/wheel-bearings-replacement). As far as the brands, stick...
ESP defective and engine turns off.
Hi there. Trying to diagnose mechanical issues in extreme cold weather you appear to be enduring is nearly impossible without being there to physically check a few common parts. The ESP stability control applies the brakes to the right rear...

Why won't my 2012 Buick Verano start

Neutral Safety Switch
It sounds like you may possibly have a bad neutral safety switch. Your vehicle has a neutral safety switch (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/neutral-safety-switch-replacement) that will prevent the vehicle from starting when it is in any gear position other than park or neutral. Occasionally,...
I have a 2003 Grand Marquis and I have jerking and hesitation around 30 to 40 miles per hour
The first thing I would check for is vacuum leaks. Any air that gets into the engine without being measured by the Mass Air Flow meter can lean out the mixture and cause drivability problems. Check all the hoses and...
