Q: Car's reverse gear solely working 2006 Cadillac XLR

asked by on September 03, 2016

The other day, I was in the parking lot and about to back out and continue driving. After I put it in reverse and backed out, I put the car in drive and applied the gas pedal. However, the car started going in reverse again instead of forward. At that point, only the reverse was working and I had the car towed home. What could cause this?

It is possible the shift cable broke after you selected "Reverse". if so, regardless of what you do with the shifter, the transmission is in Reverse. Have a professional mechanic, like YourMechanic, confirm this diagnosis, and replace the cable at your home or office.

Not too happy with having a hybrid that stalls
The problem to your intermittent stalling can be caused by the electrical water pump wiring shorting out the coil wires, causing the engine to stall and may or may not blow fuses. The repair is now covered under a recall...
Reinstalled valve body incorrectly.
I would seek a diagnosis (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/car-is-hard-to-shift-inspection) from a certified transmission mechanic. He should be able to get everything back where it is supposed to go no problem. Transmissions are very complex and he will have the training to get if...

Rpm not increasing
Without additional information regarding symptoms, this would be very difficult to diagnose. It's not very clear what is happening in this situation. Is the RPM not increasing during idle (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/car-idle-is-rough-inspection)? is the tachometer (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/3-essential-things-to-know-about-your-car-s-tachometer) not increasing as your car moves?...

Hello, thanks for writing in. If the bearings are fine then the tires need to be checked first (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/uneven-tire-wear-inspection). If there is any uneven wear then this will occur. If the tires are all fine then the hubs need to...

I have trouble starting the vehicle every time I put gas in the car

Shifting into 2nd at high RPM
Hi there. It is very possible that the speed sensor or shift solenoid is the primary source of this type of issue with the first to second shift. However, a worn out torque converter or an obstruction inside the transmission...
