Q: 1992 Plymouth Grand Caravan 3.3 V-6 Heavy off idle miss. Smooths out at higher rpm.

asked by on June 10, 2017

Engine starts OK. Idles for a minute or so until stalls. Noted heavy modulation of IAC to maintain idle. As throttle is opened off of idle, heavy stumble /heavy missing occurs. Intake popping indicative of lean out condition. Engine struggles to gain any RPM just above idle. IF the engine RPM does manage to get above about 2000 RPM then engine misfire instantly and completely disappears. Above aprox 2000 RPM, Engine readily revs up and responds normally to throttle opening. 2 junk yard MAP sensors swapped in -No change, 2 junk yard ECMs swapped in -No change. NEW TPS swapped in -No Change. NO EGR provision on this particular engine, as from factory.

Muffler is loud and the van jumps when in idle. When it jumps the muffler makes a puffing noise and smells.
This may be related to a failing catalytic converter or potentially a dirty or failing idle air control valve. The idle air control valve reads the air intake as it enters the motor and relays this information to the computer...

Although it is a little cumbersome, you could try to rule in or out a fault in the fuel delivery system by having an assistant quickly introduce "starter fluid" into the intake right at the point (very quickly, of course)...
Engine turned off while I was driving and wont start back up.
The noise you heard right before the transmission shifter went into neutral was the transmission probably popping a gear. A transmission that is noisy in gear and goes into neutral could have a solution such as adding some fluid...
