Q: When the car is started cold, it rises to normal operating temperature within 60 to 90 seconds. What could cause this?

asked by on August 29, 2017

When I start the car cold, the temperature gauge rises from cold to normal operating temperature(normal temperature reads on the gauge, a little less than 1/2). Car is not over heating, however the air temperature inside the car feels hotter than it should be(like the heater has been left on). After prolong driving the transmission and the catalytic converter feels extremely hot. What could be causing this problem?

My car has 204000 miles.

Car idle is jumping up and down during daytime but not at night or when daylight fades
What you are describing sounds like a dirty or failing idle air control valve. The idle air control valve (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/idle-control-valve-replacement) monitors the air intake as it is mixed with fuel prior to being injected into the engine at low speeds...
