What does the three way catalytic converter do?

Controlling engine emissions requires a lot of different components. Catalytic converters are part of your exhaust system, and are responsible for burning off harmful gases, or converting them into something harmless (like oxygen). Catalytic converters use precious metals like platinum, palladium and sometimes gold to create chemical reactions in gases, reducing emissions. Your car has at least one converter, but it may have several depending on the engine size. Placement will vary with engine size as well, but they’re all tied into the exhaust.
