Q: What does it mean when a car acts like it's in neutral when it's in drive? I finally got it & won't accelerate over 40?

asked by on March 06, 2018

This morning while the car was in drive it wouldn't move and acted as if it were in neutral, but it would reverse fine. Later in the day it finally cooperated but wouldn't go over 40 mph and the check engine light came on. What could be the issue?

My car has 72000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

You may have an internal transmission problem and will need to have the computer scanned to see if there are codes stored indicating the failure.

I have been told by two different dealership one said my oil should be changed every 5,000 and another one said 10,000 miles.
Many new vehicles have extended oil change intervals. Changing the oil (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/change-oil-and-filter) more often than required will certainly help prevent wear better. Some transmissions have what they call lifetime fluid. I personally believe that the additives that help with wear...

You are correct. The fan motor (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/cooling-radiator-fan-motor-replacement) has too much resistance and will not allow the full amount of current into the motor from the battery. I recommend replacing the fan motor. Also, check the voltage on the harness to...
