To be clear, are you saying that when your turn the car up the RPM's go up to redline and stay there until you turn the car off?

When I'm driving the rmp are redliningRpm
Automotive Expert
How about at idle when you first start the car? Can you help me understand what you mean by redlining? Is this when you are pressing the gas pedal or it does it on it's own?

It doesn't idle when I start the car, when I'm driving the rpm moves up by itself to 6 or 7 rpm, stays there, then, does a big jerks then moves

Okay, this could be an issue with the electronically controlled throttle body system or a transmission issue. Do you have access to diagnostic equipment?

NoIt seems to be a transmission issue
Automotive Expert
Okay, there is not much that can be done without being able to see the data. The throttle body and transmission are both electronically controlled. If the transmission is dropping down a gear then that could cause the RPM to spike but it's difficult to say. Do you have a check [engine](/topics-engine-toyota/) light on? Have you checked the transmission fluid level?

Check engine light is on, didn't check transmission fluid level
Automotive Expert
Okay, first step before you do anything is to scan the computer to retrieve the code. The light comes on because the computer system has recognized the failure and stored a trouble code. This code is most likely related to your transmission issue and will help isolate the issue. This is the first thing to do. If you don't have a scan tool then you'll need to bring it to someone that does, or your local AutoZone or Advance AutoParts can scan it for free. Depending on what is wrong, driving it could cause serious damage to both the engine and transmission based upon your symptoms so I might suggest towing it to avoid further damage. If you can provide me with the failure codes in the system I can confirm what they are related to and provide even more detailed information about your issue. I’m glad that I was able to answer your question today. My goal is to ensure you receive a 5 STAR experience.
