Inside the transmission there are electrical control units called solenoids that control the 1-2 shift and 3-4 shift. These solenoids tend to wear or become sticky from the fibers in the old fluid which can cause an extended shift concern.

It sounds to me like they are sticking slightly. There is a product called Lucas Oil Transmission Fix. Comes in a white bottle and is added right to the trans. This stuff works great and may take care of your problem.
Shift cable would not cause this type of concern.
