I have a 2010 toyota prius. Everything has been going well until just now, it won't power on. I tried pressing the start button for 60 seconds, I wss going to disconnect the white 12v going to the jumper box under the hood, but decided to wait first..any suggestions? Mechanic's Assistant: Will the headlights turn on? Is the battery fully charged? No they don't.. And it's a hydrid, full tank, just drove 15 mins before this stop. Last I remember, battery was 75 percent full Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Prius yourself? What have you tried so far? . I tried pressing the start button for 60 seconds, I wss going to disconnect the white 12v going to the jumper box under the hood, but decided to wait first Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? That's it for now thanks

Hello, my name is\*\*\*\*\* specialize in Prius repairs. The battery display in the car only indicates the hybrid battery levels, not the small 12 volt battery charge. If the headlights don't turn on, its possible the 12v battery is discharged, or there is a bad connection. Remove the trunk floor and right side cover over the battery and make sure the cables and terminals are tight, the ground cable bolted to the body is tight. Check battery voltage with a volt meter while trying to start, or hook up jumper cables to the battery to see if it will start. Be sure to not mix up positive or negative. Report back if more info is needed, thanks

The headlights do onTurn on

Ah the previous info said they didnt. It's still good to measure the voltage of the battery, or try a jump start, or disconnect the battery for a while, then reconnect to see if it will start. These are really the only things that can be done at home without a toyota scan tool. Try these and report back please. The car's computers for the hybrid system, engine, hybrid battery, abs will store fault codes to tell the technician where the next step in diagnosis should be taken. To access the codes, will need a toyota specific scan tool that can communicate with all these computers. Generic OBD2 scan tools will not show this info. there are hundreds of possible faults it could be. Next step is call local repair shops, preferably who specialize in hybrids, who are not the toyota dealer. The dealer is way overpriced, but sometimes the only local option to diagnose. Have a full diagnostic done to see which fault codes are stored.

I returned the car to the dealership and they gave me another car. Five technicians were not able to jump start it!!! I believe it's a battery issue, or even a fuse or maybe the hybrid battery, whatever the issue it's not my problem anymore. Thanks for your help!!

I just got an oil change, but smoke is coming from under the hood of my car where my coolant tank is? Do I need more coolant?
Hello. If the smoke is coming from the coolant tank then it may actually just be steam from the hot coolant, which is normal as long as the engine is not overheating. I would double check the coolant level though,...
Fuel consumption is high
Hi and thanks for your question. In order to have a good fuel consumption, the fuel to air mixture must be around 14.7 to 1. This is the formula for the air to fuel ratio. Look at the carburetor for...
My car will not start when I turn the key, it just makes a clicking sound. What is wrong?
A starter like any other mechanical and electrical part is subject to failing sometimes for no apparent reason. However, sometimes this is misdiagnosed as well and often times mistaken for something much more simple like a fuse, relay, or starter...
Why is my car idling high
This may be related to a faulty idle air control valve or possibly a throttle stop that may need to be adjusted. The idle air control valve (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/idle-control-valve-replacement) monitors the air intake as it is mixed with fuel prior to...
