Had it smoged it didn't pass they said that the Oxgen Sensor was bad, they replace it then said it was the brain had went out. Could a short in the elec. cause the brain to go out?

Hi there. The brain of the PT Cruiser is the ECU. If the unit was damaged itself, it’s highly doubtful that the engine would start at all. However, what is more than likely is that the electrical harness connected from the ECU to the O2 sensors is faulty; which is the most common mis-diagnosis of issues of failing smog inspections. I would recommend having a professional mechanic complete a check engine light inspection, which will allow them to download any stored error codes your car is indicating and determining exactly why it’s failing emissions; so the right repairs can be made.
