Q: Starting problems - 2001 Ford Expedition

asked by on September 15, 2016

My truck recently started taking several attempts to start. I changed my fuel pump because I was only hearing it partial turn on. After installing it , it did not change anything I then changed my gas cap, fuel tank pressure sensor, filter, and cam shaft position sensor. It still is not starting . It sometimes will turn over but after several attempts. What else could it be?

My car has 230000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Hey there. You should have the fuel pressure checked to see if the pressure does not drop after you turn off the vehicle. If it does, then have the pressure regulator replaced for not holding pressure. If the pressure holds but the pump intermittently does not come on, then try replacing the fuel pump relay in the fuse relay box in the engine compartment. You might also want to verify and check all fuses and fuse holders for evidence that it overheated and is losing connection. You may need to put in a fuse bypass if one is burnt. If you would like to have all of this checked for you before making repairs, a qualified professional from YourMechanic can diagnose the starting problem and perform any repairs required.

I just got an oil change, but smoke is coming from under the hood of my car where my coolant tank is? Do I need more coolant?

Hello. If the smoke is coming from the coolant tank then it may actually just be steam from the hot coolant, which is normal as long as the engine is not overheating. I would double check the coolant level though,...

Is it a fuel pump issue?

Someone attempted to steal my car and now I have a no crank no start issue

Hello. This is likely a sign of a short somewhere in the ignition circuit. Depending on what happened and what the thief tried to wire when trying to steal the vehicle, it would be hard to diagnose. Most likely while...

My car is leaking brown fluid. I'm guessing it's transmission fluid.

Hi there. Typically, ATF or automatic transmission fluid is a dark red color, while engine oil tends to start light brown and gets darker as it ages. If the leak is coming from the center of the motor, it could...

I have a Mercedes 280 SL, 1985, WDB1070421A020760, many times it just stop while driving or at a stop. I have changed the fuel pump

Wow! A 280 SL with a manual gearbox is a rare machine indeed! It looks like you've eliminated a few of the prime suspects. The fuel pump relay would have been my first guess. But it looks like you've already...

Engine idle fluctuates

There are a couple of reasons your engine idle may run high such as a vacuum leak or a dirty or faulty idle air control valve. The idle air control valve reads the air intake as it is mixed with...

I have a 89 Ranger and im getting gas in the vacuum line to the break booster which is eating thru the rubber

You should check the fuel injection pressure regulator for leaking fuel through the top vacuum port and if it is then replace it. Also replace the brake booster check valve on the brake booster. This should be the cause of...
