Q: Sometimes when I brake lightly the car jerks and stops very abruptly. This happens especially after shifting to drive from park.

sometimes after shifting to drive(for instance, pulling out of a parking spot) my brakes jerk and stop abruptly and hard even if I press ever so slightly. What might be the problem? Is this normal?

My car has 60000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

The brakes should apply smoothly and consistently is response to intensity of pressure on the pedal. If the brakes grab or apply in "step" fashion, that is not normal.
