Q: Shifting won't go into gear - 1973 Chevrolet C20

asked by on September 04, 2016

My truck has a 500 catty motor in it, but I am pretty sure it has a 350 transmission in it. The transmission shifts but won’t go into any gear. The fly wheel is bolted up. All of the fluids are in good shape. I adjusted the linkage, but the shifting feels weird on the column. It doesn’t feel normal like it should. Do you have any suggestions?

Check fluid level in the transmission. Did you correctly engage the front pump with the torque convertor, and filled the torque convertor with fluid before installing it? Let the truck idle 15 minutes or so, and check for Drive/Reverse after fluid has circulated, topping off fluid if necessary. If still no Drive/Reverse, have the truck taken to a transmission shop that can diagnose the transmission.

Changing thermostat did not stop car from overheating.
Air or restrictions in the system or low coolant level are the two most common causes of overheating (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/car-is-overheating-inspection). I would look near the thermostat that was just replaced to ensure that it isn't leaking. If it is not I...
Clutch not working properly.
This sounds like you have a busted clutch (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/clutch-is-not-working-inspection) or transmission along with your axles being broken. The broken axles may be an indication that the transmission input shaft or clutch is broken. The engine oil cooler would have to...
Loose Steering? 2012 GMC Sierra 1500
Hey there. I would suggest having the inner and outer tie rods (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/tie-rod-end-replacement) checked for looseness and replaced if any play is found. When checking the rack and pinion mounts and bushings there should also be no looseness. The steering's...
My SUV is running hard and has the Diagnostic Trouble Code P0016

Check the wiring harness to the sensor that is located on the bottom of the engine by the crankshaft pulley. Check for voltage...

Makes a clunking noise when I put it in reverse
Hi Krystal. Thanks for contacting us today. Replicating a noise is really difficult for any mechanic - especially if they deem it to be 'normal'. With most 'performance cars' (like your Camaro, Dodge Challengers, Ford Mustang's for example), the transmission...
Hi, I would like to know if I can install an OEM AC for Jeep Renegade Sport 2017. If yes, how much would cost ( kit + install
It would be difficult to determine the exact cost of all of these parts without checking with your local parts dealer. I can say that it is very likely with installing a system such as this on your vehicle and...
