Check eng lite and possible backfires

My car has 70000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Hello. If the distributor shaft has that much play, it will cause erratic ignition timing and possible misfiring. Possible causes could be the distributor shaft or drive gear being excessively worn or broken causing the movement. Continued driving with misfires/backfiring can cause internal damage to pistons, etc. I recommend having a certified professional diagnose the cause of the Check Engine Light to pinpoint the correct repairs that are needed. Reading the codes first will help resolve this issue.
