Sure why not Mechanic's Assistant: What is the make/model/year of your car? 2015 Smart Fortwo Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your vehicle yourself? What have you tried so far? I tried taking it to Mercedes and 400 bucks later still have the same problem Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? Check engine light and loss of power if I stop, turn the car off and then restart it runs fine but the check engine stays on

Hey there, Jake here. Sorry your having issues, but thanks for reaching out. Is this an all electric? or a gas version?

So whats going on?

Check engine light and loss of power
Automotive Expert
do you have the fault code? the engine light is telling you there is a code?

Mercedes told me it was a miss fire on all three cylindersThey replaced the plugs and sent me on my way with a 400 dollar bill and the car did the same thing the next daySeems very strange that it runs fine and then for no reason just losses powerAfter a quick restart it runs fine sometimes for another two or three tripsIdeas?

Yea, alot of things can cause misfires on these engines (valves, carbon build up, etc) I have even seen the vvt solenoid cause a misfire on all 3 cylinders. So just the misfire code in and of itself doesn't say alot as to the issue. The fact that it resets like that and works fine for a period of time could mean the VVT solenoid is the issue, but looking at the solenoid readings and lruling out a fuel trim issue would be ideal when its happening. replacing he spark plugs was a lazy move on this vehicle unless they has reason to beleive they were the issue (excessive gap, very worn, etc)

What is a vvt solenoid?Very lazy in that car only has 16000 miles I thought
Automotive Expert
its s timing control solenoid, but when it fails it usually throws cam / crank sensor codes.

But the service rep said Mercedes recommends plugs every 3 years no meter the mileageYea the service rep said she looked at the code machine and reported misfire on all three cylindersDo you think a Snap On code reading will work on the Smart car

Did I loose you?
Automotive Expert
i am here, sorry got pulled away

You still on?I have independent mechanic shop that I have had good luck with but the Smart Car seems pretty high tech so I tried the dealerDo you think a Snap On Code reader will read on a smart
Automotive Expert
I understand the misfire codes (those are common) on these cars. The cars also go through plugs and have carbon build up alot quicker than most cars so fuel system treatment is helpful. The weird part with yours is you indicating it comes and goes, which sounds more like a fuel trim issue which can be evaluated on a scan tool just like the solenoid duty if it were stuck. as long as the snap on scanner has been updated past 2015 it should.

the car would need to have the misfire while plugged in to the scanner
Automotive Expert
you want it to be running poorly when the mechanic is looking at it yes! Easiest way to diagnose it.

Could be difficult as it resets when I restartWhen I had the problem it will barely goSound tricky
Automotive Expert
its tricky with no other codes then misfires yes. could try a fuel system cleaning to see if it helps, these commonly have carbon issues.

You have any recommended brandswill disconnecting the battery clear the check engine light?

You still here?
Automotive Expert
BG makes a food produxtGOOD product

Is this something NAPA will [sell](/topics-sell/)?
Automotive Expert
disconnecting it will clear it until it misfires again then it will come backBG may need to order online

Liked “Yes disconnecting it will clear it until it misfires again then it will come back”Ok I will look on lineAny other advise on figuring this out?
Automotive Expert
At this moment no, not until there is more info or testing.

By chance do you know where the VVC is located on a smart engine? Is it accessible?
Automotive Expert
It’s at the rear of the cylinder head.

You think I can get to it thru the engine bay cover in the back of the car
Automotive Expert
Tight fit but sire

Thanks I will try
