Q: Losing power

asked by on December 10, 2017

I have a 2001 Honda prelude and I have an exhaust leak on my flex pipe and then when I hit the gas in the car goes over 4000 RPMs the car hesitates to pick up speed once I do it Cole start the car idles at 1000 RPMs and then hesitates at 2000 RPM‘s so it drops to 1000 RPMs and almost dies once I get it going it shakes when I’m at a stop in sometime stars so far I’ve change the O2 sensor and I’m thinking of cleaning out my EGR valve once in neutral and running in first gear when they take off it sounds like a go cart it does smell like gas in my engine bay or might be a head gasket I don’t know what else to do about me losing power

My car has 175000 miles.
My car has a manual transmission.

The exhaust leak should be repaired first. Leaking carbon monoxide is bad for your health and could be deadly. In addition, exhaust leaks can cause engine malfunctions, particularly if an O2 sensor is affected. So, you should first have the leak pinpointed and repaired. Once the leak is fixed, if the loss of power problem persists, you can have the engine diagnosed for both loss and power and fluctuating RPMS. Loss of power on acceleration can be due to plugged fuel injectors, faulty oxygen sensors, fuel pump and/or filter, vacuum leaks including that caused by a faulty EGR system, ignition system malfunctions, bad valve timing if the timing belt or chain is worn or skipped, blocked exhaust (e.g., catalytic converter fails or becomes clogged), a faulty airflow sensor or throttle position sensor, and so forth. To pinpoint the exact cause will require an engine loss of power diagnostic. If you request the leak repair and that diagnostic, the certified mechanic will get your car functioning normally and reliably.
