So any noise from a fan is not good that will need to be replaced, as far as the coolant smell goes that can just be over flow from it overheating, you want to get the new fan installed, check coolant level and run to see if the new fan is cooling better, I suspect the fan now is just not getting up to speed causing the overheat issue.
