Loud grinding and knocking noises from the transmission area. Mechanic's Assistant: Have you heard this particular sound before? No. However, I just purchased this vehicle. Mechanic's Assistant: What is the make/model/year of your transmissions? 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4WD Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Grand Cherokee yourself? What have you tried so far? I am not fixing it myself. I am looking for a local mechanic to help. Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? Nothing I can think of other than I need this to be done asap.

Hello, my name is James. You are correct when you say you need this problem looked at as soon as possible. Loud grinding and knocking sounds are usually caused by worn, loose or broken gears, bearings or chains in the transfer case, transmission (if it is a manual trans.), or one of the differentials (sound can telescope up or down the drivelines and seem like it is coming from somewhere else). No matter what, the vehicle does need to be lifted up on a rack and thoroughly inspected by someone who knows what they are doing.
