This may be a sign of a weak battery, a failing voltage regulator or failing alternator. As you may know, the alternator is responsible for charging the battery while the engine runs by generating amperage and recharging the battery while the engine turns the alternator. The voltage regulator is a unit that regulates the charging of the battery by the alternator.

When the voltage regulator is not working properly, this may result in the alternator allowing too much power to be delivered to the battery resulting in damaging wires and prematurely sometimes destroying the battery. A common sign of this is usually the acid inside the battery boiling causing the battery to swell. In other cases it may result in the alternator not supplying enough power to the battery, resulting in undercharging the battery or not charging it at all. I would recommend having an expert from YourMechanic come to your location to diagnose your vehicle’s charging system.

Advice on how to keep cars that aren't used very often from rotting
Yes, it depends on how long the car is going to be sitting (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/5-essential-things-to-know-about-storing-your-car). Your tires could possibly go bad. A lot of weight is sitting on the tires. It's a good idea to once in a while jack up...

My car will start, just not run.
Hi, thanks for writing in. I would start with testing your battery and alternator with a multi meter. Good batteries (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/how-to-buy-a-good-quality-car-battery) hold a charge of 12.6 volts or higher. If the battery is low, try to jump start it. If...
My van is misfiring. Can I drive 400 miles before changing them? I'm traveling home now
Hi and thanks for contacting YourMechanic. If the Check Engine Light says that your vehicle has a misfire, then you will need to check the spark plugs (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/spark-plugs-replacement) and wires (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/ignition-cable-spark-plug-wires-replacement). I suggest replacing the spark plugs if they have...
