Q: I changed the head gasket because of an oil leak now the oil leak is gone but the radiator is releasing steam

asked by on

So i had a oil leak coming from the head gasket because the head had a slight warp..... changed the head gasket and shaved the head now a new problem has arrived.....the coolant becomes hot in about 1min or less and steam comes out of the radiator....with the cover off i notice a few small bubbles in the radiator but only when accelerated....i checked and the oil and water isn't mixing....could it be a faulty radiator? My car has a manual transmission.

You may want to have the cooling system pressure tested to see if the head gasket is leaking or the head has a crack in it. A pressure test and combustion gas test on system will tell you if there is a problem or you may just not have a thermostat opening or have excess air in the cooling system and once purged will be okay. When refilling the system you should have engine idling until you see coolant go down indicating thermostat opened and then top off system. If problem continues then have the tests done to isolate cause.
