Q: Heater is not working

the car wont heat up..the thermostat is reading very high, the coolant is nearly full, when the engine is off i opened the bonnet and there was a lot of steam or gas hissing around the engine, i could hear it from inside the car. looked like it was coming from a hose/cable behind the engine ie. away from the radiator
