Hi Kala. Nice to see you today! I'm sorry to hear you are having this problem. I know this can be frustrating. Please give me one moment to type out some information for you. Sit tight one minute... I'll be right back!

Ok thanks
Automotive Expert
Thanks for holding, Kala. From what you are describing here, this sounds like it will be the case of a faulty alternator. There is a quick and easy test for this, with the use of a volt meter. With the [engine](/topics-engine-ford/) running, take a voltage reading across the battery (if you need to jump-start the vehicle, remove jumper cables before testing). The voltage should be between 13.2-14.4v. If the voltage is not within specs or fluctuates in and out of this range, the alternator will need to be replaced. If you do not have access to a volt meter, most local big-chain parts stores will run this test for free in their parking lot. Make sure the battery cables are tight and free or any corrosion. And make sure the serpentine belt is tight around all the pulleys.

Okay thanks for the info moving forward how labor intensive will it be on 2002 escape to replace alternator
Automotive Expert
Kala, does your Escape have the 4-cylinder or 6-cylinder engine? On the 6-cylinder engine, the labor time guide calls for 2.8 hours to complete the repair. Due to the setup, the passenger's side axle shaft will first need to be removed, as the alternator is removed from under the vehicle and out the passenger's side of the engine compartment. So, unfortunately, this one is a bit on the advanced side. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news here, Kala.

On the 6-cylinder engine, the labor time guide calls for 2.8 hours to complete the repair. Due to the setup, the passenger's side axle shaft will first need to be removed, as the alternator is removed from under the vehicle and down-and-out the passenger's side of the engine compartment. So, unfortunately, this one is a bit on the advanced side. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news here, Kala

Great..my husband and his buddy work at a shop with a lift so they will be able to fix
Automotive Expert
Excellent! That's great news! With a lift, this will be much easier! Shouldn't be a problem for them at all!
Automotive Expert
Glad I could be of some help today, Kala! I hope everything works out well for you! Have a great day! Thank you for choosing Just Answer for your questions!

I got volt meter done and the alternator is not putting out any voltage at all so that is the problem
Automotive Expert
Yes. The voltage should be between 13.2-14.4. If not, check the connections at the alternator and make sure they are tight. And make sure the battery cables are tight and free of corrosion. If yes, replace the alternator.
