Ok it’s making a whining noise now while it is running. It was whining after I drove it for like 45 minutes but now it’s constant. And when I looked under the hood I noticed that my harmonic balancer pulley shakes or becomes misaligned almost (it doesn’t ride straight and true like the other pulleys) Mechanic's Assistant: What is the make/model/year of your car? 1999 dodge Dakota sport 3.9l Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Dakota yourself? What have you tried so far? Yes I am and my truck has been sitting for a while or I would have to assume it was considering it only has 70,000 miles on it. But it’s like everything with a bearing needed to be replaced or something. I changed the tensioner, idler pulley, [alternator](/topics-alternator-dodge/), power steering pump, I also bought a new water pump but have not installed it yet Mechanic's Assistant: When was the fluid last checked? Have you heard any whining noises while turning the wheel? Not really unless I have the wheel turned as far as it is aloud to go buy it sounds like it’s just the rack and pinion bottoming out. Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? And are you talking about the engine oil? I just changed it 1500 miles ago

Give me one moment while I review your question and I will be right back with your answer, or I may need some additional information from you about your vehicle. The site will ask for a phone call not me so please disregard thanks. Ok did any one remove the crank pullet to cause it to be loose or misaligned? When you replaced the tensioner and idler pulley did it make noise right after it was the noise there prior?

I don't think there was a noise prior and no I did not remove the harmonic balancer. But I feel like it's been running a little rough almost like vibration or something. Not crazy bad just enough for me to notice I guessBut actually it was making a slight noise prior that's why I changed those pulleys it sounded to me like bad bearing in the pulleys. I even put a stethoscope to each pulley to make sure

Is the engine light on? Also can you take a long pry bar or screw driver and put your ear on it and check to see exactly where you hear the noise? Cous be a bad tensioner or idler or even pump. One the same page as you posted at the same time lol So where do you hear the noise coming from the the stethoscope?

See that's what I thought but I changed the tensioner and idler and pump lol. But the noise sounds like it is coming generally from the middle somewhere so I was kind of assuming that maybe the harmonic balancer is bad since the pulley doesn't ride perfect like the other pulleys and also because it's 22 years old regardless of only having 70,000 miles on it.

Yes I have seen these actually come flying off. You need to start there but once you remove the crank pulley see if there is any damage to the crank where it sits in as I seen the key ways break so make sure to check that. I would start here next.

What would I do if the key way is broken? Replace the crank??
Automotive Expert
No you can fix it with a larger key way and some red lock tight and you will be fine.

Ok thank god I panicked slightly

How do you use the trip A/B function in the message center?
The trip A/B function in your car’s message center is the same thing as the dual trip odometers on a model without the message center. These are separate odometers designed to let you track the mileage and the time on...
Plugs not sparking.
Hi there! Spark plugs usually stop working due to old age. Spark plugs conduct electricity through the electrode of the spark plugs to ignite the fuel. An electrode will become shorter after each ignition just as a candle wick would....
No crank issue
Hello. Most of the time when you get a cam code on this engine it is because of a crank sensor issue (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-crankshaft-position-sensor). I would replace the crank sensor first. If the problem persists then the timing chain (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-timing-chain) will...
there is a bad canistor close valve. is that needed, does it have to be fixed to be a safe car
Hello. It may be that the technician possibly was referring to a canister purge valve (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/canister-purge-solenoid-replacement) or solenoid. If this was the case, then yes, it's important to fix this for multiple reasons. First, the canister purge valve is responsible...

No compression but spark is there, fuel goes good. What is happening? The car only cranks and doesn't start.
Hi there, thanks for writing in. Unfortunately, if there is no compression, you have internal engine failure. This could be piston ring failure. Generally, a used engine would be the order for the repair as the cylinder walls could be...
