Q: Car is having problems starting in morning

asked by on

I just replaced my starter and battery, but now my car turns over 3-4 times in the morning and won't start unless I give it some gas. once the car warms up it will start right away after the first time. It drives without a problem and isn't making any noise or has a weird smell.

My car has 131000 miles.

You will need to have the fuel pressure checked with a gauge when the vehicle is first started to see if there is pressure at the injectors or the pressure drops off after key is off. This is an indication that the fuel pump is not holding pressure to the injectors and leaking down. The pressure will take a few seconds to bring up the fuel pressure so the engine will start. Replace the fuel pump and filter to correct the condition.

Q: Not sure if hose or water pump is the issue. Bad leak spraying coolant on belts. Could it be a hose or water pump?

Water pumps have weep holes, through which coolant can leak if the pump is failing, but those weep holes are are relatively small. Consequently, the leak is more likely due to a fairly large hole, or tear, in a rubber...

Q: My Dodge Avenger is running hot intermittently. New thermostate, coolant has been flushed for air pockets.

A scan tool should be applied to measure the actual engine operating temperature. Gauge and/or temperature sensor/sending unit malfunctions have to be ruled out. if the car is in fact overheating, a plugged radiator, a faulty radiator pressure cap, collapsed...
