How to Renew Your Car Registration in New Jersey

Living in New Jersey comes with a variety of advantages. The great roadways and bridges that are a part of this state’s landscape are funded by the hard working men and women who live there. One of the main ways that the state raises money for their road upkeep is by requiring citizens to register with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. After you have initially registered the vehicle, you will be required to renew it every year. When the time comes to renew the registration, you will receive a notice from the MVC. This notice will contain the following information:

  • The fee that you will have to pay for the renewal
  • The date that the fees are due
  • The PIN number that you will need to renew online
  • An envelope that will allow you to mail in your registration

Once you have received this notice, you will be able to pick the renewal method that best suits your needs.

Renewing your registration in person

If you want to renew your registration in person, then you will need to travel to the MVC office that is nearest to you. You will have to gather some documents before you go. Here is what you will need to take with you when you go to the MVC:

  • A valid New Jersey driver’s license
  • The renewal notice and license plate number
  • The car insurance documents that prove you have adequate coverage
  • The money that you need to pay the fees

Handle the renewal online

Some people would rather use the power of technology to handle their renewal. Here is what you will need to do to renew your registration online:

  • Get the PIN that was sent in your renewal notice
  • Visit the web address that is on the notice
  • Have your proof of insurance
  • Pay the fees that you owe with a credit or debit card

Mailing in the registration renewal

If you want to use the mail to complete this process, you will need to do the following:

  • Get a copy of your proof of insurance
  • Make a check or money order out to NJMVC

Once you get these things in an envelope, you will need to mail them to:

NJ Motor Vehicle Commission
Revenue Processing Center
P.O. Box 009
Trenton, NJ 08646-0009

The fees associated with registration renewal

The fees that you will have to pay during this process will be based on the following:

  • The type of vehicle
  • The weight of the vehicle
  • The year and model of the vehicle

The emissions inspections

Usually, every two years, you will need to have an emissions inspection performed on your vehicle. If you need more information on this process, be sure to visit the New Jersey DMV website.
