How to Buy a Personalized License Plate in Colorado

A personalized license plate is a great way to make your vehicle uniquely “you.” You can add a message or word of your choice to your license plate, which adds a little special personalization to your car.

In Colorado, the process of obtaining a personalized license plate is very quick and straightforward. It won’t take you long at all to get a cool new license plate that makes your car stand out from the pack.

  • Tip: Make sure your vehicle is currently registered in the state of Colorado or your application for a personalized plate will be denied.

Part 1 of 3: Find the Colorado personalized license plate forms

Step 1: Go to the Department of Revenue site. Log on to Colorado’s Department of Revenue website.

Step 2: Go to the DMV site. While you’re on Colorado’s Department of Revenue website, click the button on the main page that says “Division of Motor Vehicles.”

Step 3: Find the personalized license plate form. From the Division of Motor Vehicles page, click the button that says “Vehicles”, then click the button that says “Regular License Plates.”

Step 4: Select Personalized License Plate Application. Next, click on the button that says “Passenger License Plate,” then select “Personalized License Plate Application.”

  • Tip: If you want to save time, you can find this form by googling “Colorado Personalized License Plate Application.”

Part 2 of 3: Fill out the Personalized License Plate Application form

Step 1: Enter your information. The Personalized License Plate Application will require your basic information, such as your name, address, and telephone number. You will also have to provide the names of anyone listed on the vehicle’s registration, and the type of vehicle that you have.

  • Tip: You can fill out this form on your computer and then print it, or you can print the blank form and fill it out with a pen.

Step 2: Select your style of license plate. When personalizing your license plate, you not only get to choose the characters on the plate, but also the style of license plate. Choose the available plate that you wish to have.

Step 3: Enter your plate letters and numbers. Fill out your preferred personalized license plate. The Personalized License Plate Application has five slots for you to write your preferred license plate.

If your first request is unavailable, you will get your second request, and so on. You have seven characters that you can use, which includes spaces.

  • Note: Next to your license plate choices, you will have to explain the meaning of the plate you are choosing. If either the meaning or the plate itself is vulgar or offensive, your application will be rejected.

Step 4: Mail your application. Mail your license plate application to the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles. After filling out your entire Personalized License Plate Application, seal it in an envelope with the requisite postage, and mail it to:

The Department of Revenue
Motor Vehicle Registration
Denver, CO 80261-0016

  • Note: You do not need to provide any payment at this time.

  • Tip: If your vehicle is not currently registered in the state of Colorado, your application will be denied.

Part 3 of 3: Get your personalized Colorado license plate

Step 1: Pay for your plates. After your license plate application has been accepted, you will receive a notification from the clerk office, which will include an amount that you have to pay. Follow the instructions sent in the notification to pay for your personalized Colorado license plates.

Step 2: Pick up your plates. After your payment has been received, your license plates will be shipped to your local clerk office, and they will again notify you, this time to let you know that your plates are ready.

  • Tip: Bring your notification letter to the county clerk office when you pick up your new personalized license plates.

After following these steps, you’ll have a great new personalized license plate for your Colorado vehicle! Your plates will be a lot of fun, and have your car say something about you. If you don’t feel comfortable installing the new license plates on your car, ask a mechanic to do the job for you.
