I have a BMW 1 series 56 plate I brought some new fuses for it and now it won’t start Mechanic's Assistant: Have you checked the battery, particularly the terminal connections? Are they corroded? No I don’t think so it did jump start once or twice Mechanic's Assistant: What year is your 1 Series? 56 Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your 1 Series yourself? What have you tried so far? I was advised that it had just had a new starter motor fitted and that I needed to replace fuses Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? Hello Kelly. Nice to hear from you today! I'm sorry to hear you are having this problem. I know this can be frustrating. I assume your last response is in response to the phone call request. I apologize for the call request. That is an automated offer the website offers all customers. We can continue here instead. Were some of the fuses blown and did you remove some fuses and replace them with other fuses and now the engine won't start?

that's right I removed some of the fuses and replaced the new ones but none of them were blown as far as I am awareOnce I changed the fuses the passenger window starting working but the car would not start

Have you plugged in a fully compatible scan tool that is able to read all computers in your vehicle to see what fault codes come up with this issue?

it did not read anything it was blank
Automotive Expert
Was it blank as in not able to read any of the computers or blank as in no codes came up?

it did not read anything it was blank

Thank you for your reply and that information as this does help me better understand the situation. Please give me one moment to type out some info for you. I’ll be right back!

Ok thank you
Automotive Expert
Your welcome. Thank you for holding Kelly! I suspect the code reader or scan tool that was used is not one that is fully compatible with your vehicle. This is most likely why it was blank as I have come across before and had to use a different fully compatible scan tool to read the computers and codes. I recommend rechecking to make sure all fuses are installed properly just to make sure that is not causing this issue. If the fuses are all o.k. and installed properly I suspect you caused codes to set in the computers when the fuses were replaced and the computer has disabled the engine from starting until the codes are cleared out with a compatible scan tool. A compatible scan tool will have to be plugged into your vehicle's data port that can read and clear the codes from all computers in your vehicle to resolve this problem. Then the computer will allow the engine to start and run again.

that would make sense as the car was starting and driving before the fuses were changed
Automotive Expert
That is usually what I see myself is that a fuse is in the wrong location or isn't seated properly or that codes set in the computers that have to be cleared out with a scan tool before the vehicle will start and operate properly again.

Ok thank you as the car was second hand it did not come with a user manual or with the fuse box code paper so I had to research on the internet where to put the core fuses
Automotive Expert
Your welcome! Glad I could be of some help! I hope everything works out well for you! If there are any additional questions on this issue that should arise, please feel free to reply and ask! Thank you for choosing Just Answer for your questions. Have a great day!

I suspect this is the issue as I did put more fuses in the fuse box which did make a difference as the central locking starting working but the steering lock locked and immobilised the car

You may have installed fuses into slots that are not a feature on your model which in turn can cause shorts to occur and damage to electronics. It's hard to say from here for sure which fuses should be installed and which ones should not be installed as it varies depending on vehicle options. I recommend having that looked into by a shop if you can so they can check the vehicle options and fuses to find any installed that need to be removed or you can try removing them one by one to see if the vehicle then starts and operates. If it does then I would leave the fuse out that allows it to start and run.

Ok that is brilliant thank you I shall follow your advice many thanks have a great weekend

Your most welcome and have a great weekend as well!

I notice my car shakes a little when i accelerate from a full stop.
