Q: The D light on the dashboard keeps blinking after the gear shift from reverse to drive

asked by on May 31, 2017

The D light on the dashboard keeps blinking after the gear shifts from reverse to drive and the check engine sign pops up, but it drives ok. Please, what is the issue

My car has 214000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Hi There, The blinking D light indicates that there is a problem with the transmission. This may be something mechanical such as a shift solenoid or possibly some electrical such as a transmission speed sensor. This may also indicate that the transmission fluid may be low as well. I would not recommend driving the vehicle any further until you have this looked at by a qualified mechanic in order to avoid any potential further damage to the transmission.

How Long Does a Transmission Filter Last?
Most transmission filters (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/how-does-a-transmission-filter-work) are designed to filter the transmission fluid of metal particles from normal wear of a transmission. The filter is made from a paper filter media or a fine metal mesh screen. Some filters are an external...
Smoke is coming from steering wheel column and there is a burning smell, loud noise from engine.
This sounds like there are two different problems, but the "something's burning" problem is critical. There is obviously an electrical short somewhere inside the steering column that has already done damage, and could lead to a sudden shutoff in traffic,...
The car jerks and the lights flicker when idling.
I would recommend to start by checking the alternator connector, battery connections, battery cables including the wire to the main fuse/relay box, and grounds. If you hold the engine rpm to a stable 1000 rpm with the throttle, check to...

Is the wheel bearing and rotor made all together? How do I get the rotor off?
Hello, thank you for writing in. False, the rotor and the wheel bearing are two separate components. The rotor just becomes incredibly hot and dirty fusing it into place. If you have a lot of dust, snow, or rain in...

Hi there. If this is an OEM fitting application, your best bet is to contact a GM dealership, as they should have the correct parts you need. If it's aftermarket, having a place like Parker Hose or a local fuel...
Car intermittently won't start -- this time won't even start when jump started
Hi Eric M. An issue like you've described is very difficult to diagnose without an onsite inspection (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/electric-problems-inspection). If you're able to activate the starter on a consistent basis, then you can rule that component out as the source of...

Hi Mary. Thanks for contacting us today. What you are describing is commonly caused by a damaged electrical relay or an electrical short circuit within the steering column. In some instances, it can be a combination of electrical problems, such...
