Q: Overfilled my oil after draining to proper level what should i do?

asked by on January 26, 2018

Overfilled my oil and drove about 8 miles. Started driving rough. Got home drained oil to proper level. What else do I need to do?

My car has 106000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

If the engine is operating normally now, and you have ensured that the oil level is no higher than the full mark on the dipstick, no further steps are required. Overfilling oil can cause aeration of the oil and loss of lubrication. If the oil level is really high, oil might get into the cylinders and excessive oil there could foul the spark plugs. If the engine does continue to run rough, the spark plugs should be checked for fouling.
